Relief valves on refrigeration vessels

Safety relief valves protect receivers, heat exchangers, oil separators and sections of pipe that can be isolated between valves against pressure above the design limit. The set pressure of 11 bar suits a vessel designed to a maximum allowable pressure of at least that value; other settings from the same family have separate code numbers.

The SFA 15 sits above the SFA 10 in flow capacity. In the same data sheet family are SFA 10, SFA 10H and SFA 15-50 (the same body in a larger version), and DSV dual-valve combinations. The certified coefficient and the flow area are the figures that the pressure-equipment calculation uses.

Installation, sizing and ordering

Sizing of a relief valve belongs to the pressure-vessel calculation. Use the certified discharge coefficient, the vessel external fire and compressor-capacity cases and the relevant standard. The valve must discharge to a safe place; avoid back-pressure above what the installation guide permits.

Confirm the set pressure, the thread type and the certificate you need. The valve must not be re-set by the user; a changed setting voids the certificate. Install vertically with the outlet pipe supported, and test or replace valves per your inspection regime.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.
