Brand:

ABB MS132-16 Manual Motor Starter 10-16 A

Description

MS132-16 motor protector for 5.5-7.5 kW motors

MS132-16 covers 10 to 16 A in the MS132 family and is one step up in body size from the 10 A device. It provides adjustable thermal overload protection, a magnetic trip set at 192 to 288 A, phase-loss sensitivity and a visible ON/OFF/TRIP handle that can be padlocked.

ABB’s order table lists a packing weight of 310 g for this type and the 12, 20, 25 and 32 A sizes, compared with 265 g for the smaller devices. Screw terminals are M4 and need 1.5 Nm.

Where the 16 A setting fits

A 7.5 kW, 400 V motor draws about 15 A, so the top of the 10 to 16 A scale suits it; 5.5 kW fits the lower half. Setting the dial to the motor nameplate current is the correct practice because the device trips at 1.2 x the setting.

At 230 V and 400 V the data sheet lists 100 kA Ics and Icu with no back-up fuse; at 690 V it falls to 3 kA. Losses are 1.1 W per phase at 10 A and 2.8 W at 16 A, so allow for about 8 W in the enclosure when three poles carry full current.

Order code, neighbours and accessories

The code MS132-16 corresponds to 1SAM350000R1011; note that MS132-12 has the higher suffix R1012 in the ABB table. Variants with a pre-assembled HKF1-11 or HKF1-20 contact use the 1SAM350005 and 1SAM350006 prefixes.

For a bigger motor see the MS132-20, -25 and -32, which need 6 mm2 terminals at 2 Nm.

Documents and quotation

The linked file is ABB MS132 manual motor starter data sheet 2CDC131021D0201. Seven Star LLC supplies the MS132-16 on request from Muscat; availability and lead time are stated in the quotation. For other protection devices see the Circuit Breakers category, for example the ABB Tmax XT moulded case circuit breakers.

Confirm before ordering: motor full-load current inside the setting range, the available fault level at the panel, whether the HKF1 auxiliary contact is needed, and the terminal type.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Formed 5 January 1988, by the merger of ASEA (Sweden) and BBC Brown Boveri (Switzerland), each holding 50%

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
