LAR QuickCODultra Online COD (TOD) Analyzer
Overview
The LAR QuickCODultra is an online COD (TOD) water analyzer developed by LAR Process Analysers in Berlin, now part of Process Insights. It measures chemical oxygen demand through total oxygen demand, by oxidizing the complete water sample at 1,200 °C and detecting the oxygen consumed. The method follows ASTM D6238 and needs no catalysts and no additional hazardous chemicals, unlike the dichromate reflux method used in laboratories. A COD (TOD) result is available within 1 to 2 minutes, and the analyzer can handle sticky, fatty, salty and particle-laden samples, including salt concentrations up to 600 g/l.
Seven Star LLC supplies the LAR QuickCODultra to industrial wastewater treatment plants, refineries, petrochemical complexes and municipal operators in Oman and the GCC. From Muscat we supply consumables on request and provide engineering support with application questionnaires, sample preparation and integration into plant control systems.
Measurement Principle
In the LAR QuickCODultra a robotic injection system doses a defined sample volume into a high-temperature reactor held at 1,200 °C, where all oxidizable organic and inorganic compounds are converted completely. A carrier gas with a known oxygen content flows through the reactor, and the analyzer measures the oxygen consumed by the oxidation, which is the total oxygen demand of the sample. Because oxidation is thermal rather than chemical, results are free of chloride interference thanks to LAR process management, and there is no reagent handling or chromium and mercury waste.
In general, TOD and COD correlate closely for most wastewater matrices, which is why a TOD-based analyzer is widely used for continuous COD monitoring and discharge control. The LAR QuickCODultra works on a batch principle, and optional sum parameters such as TOC and TNb can be measured in combination with COD (TOD), giving a fuller picture of organic and nitrogen loads from one instrument.
Engineering Design of the LAR QuickCODultra
Sample preparation is handled by the FlowSampler, a maintenance-free particle separator, with an optional homogenizer for continuous homogenization; particles below 800 µm can be measured. The analyzer can handle up to six sample streams. The standard housing is powder-coated steel rated IP54, measuring W 848 x H 1,100 x D 635 mm and weighing from 115 kg. For hazardous areas, Process Insights lists ATEX/UKEX Zone 2 T4 and ATEX/UKEX Zone 1/IECEx T4 versions in IP54 stainless steel housings, the Zone 1 analyzer measuring W 1,080 x H 1,293 x D 700 mm with a separate signal box.
Inflow and outflow use 4.8 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm ID tubing. Power is 230 or 115 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz with 16 A external protection. Outputs include 0/4-20 mA analog signals and an RS 232 serial interface, and remote control through TCP/IP is offered as an option. Permissible sample temperature is 5 to 60 °C, and the recommended ambient temperature is 10 to 30 °C at up to 80% relative humidity, which in the GCC usually means installation in an air-conditioned analyzer shelter.
As general background, the classic laboratory COD test digests a sample with potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid for about two hours, using silver and mercury salts, and produces hazardous waste. A continuous thermal method such as the LAR QuickCODultra replaces that with an automatic measurement every few minutes and no reagent waste, which changes COD from a delayed compliance number into a live process variable. Many plants still run periodic laboratory tests to confirm the correlation between the online TOD reading and their reported COD, and the LAR QuickCODultra result can be scaled accordingly in the control system.

Industrial Applications
Process Insights lists discharge control, industrial wastewater, de-icing water, water influent, water effluent and process water as applications for the LAR QuickCODultra. In Oman and the GCC this covers refinery and petrochemical effluent treatment in Sohar and Duqm, produced water and oily water treatment at oil and gas facilities, influent and effluent monitoring at municipal wastewater plants, airport de-icing runoff, and food and beverage wastewater. Fast results allow operators to divert high-load streams, protect biological treatment and document discharge compliance.

LAR analyzer spare parts listed here
The four listed items are parts for the UV persulfate oxidation analyzer type, the QuickTOCuv: a glass reactor for the UV method (501-40-000106, formerly 501-04-000021), a low-pressure 15 W ozone-free UV emitter (501-40-000159), a five-channel peristaltic pump (501-40-000215) and a gas drying tube for the carrier gas path (501-08-000045). All of them are wear or consumable parts replaced during routine upkeep.Ordering LAR parts: what we need
Send the LAR part number in the 501-xx-xxxxxx format, and the old number as well if your manual shows one. Add the analyzer type and serial number from the type plate, because the QuickTOCuv, QuickTOCultra and other models use different reactors, pumps and tubing. A photo of the old part and the manual's spare parts page speed up the check. We supply these parts to water, power and petrochemical sites across the GCC.Browse LAR Process Analysers products by category: Liquid Analytical Accessories.
