The W100W series is Walchem’s economical and reliable controller for keeping a cooling tower, boiler or condensate water-treatment programme under control. It is offered as the WCTW cooling tower controller and the WBLW boiler controller, each built around conductivity measurement. A large display with icon-based programming makes set-up simple, and the universal sensor input lets the same controller work with different conductivity sensors.

The third control relay lets the W100W be used in more places than other entry-level controllers. Each relay can be set to bleed on conductivity, bleed in proportion to makeup-water volume, blow down a boiler on conductivity with intermittent sampling, feed in proportion to bleed time, feed in proportion to makeup volume, feed as a percentage of elapsed time, or run a biocide timer with pre-bleed and post-feed bleed lockout.

Ordering the W100W and choosing sensors

The ordering code has three parts. First choose the relay and wiring option: 100H, 100P or 100D give three powered relays (hardwired, USA cord with pigtails, or DIN cord), while 110H, 110P or 110D give three dry relays. Then choose no analog output or one isolated 4-20 mA output. Finally pick the sensor package.

For the WCTW, sensor options run from A (inline or submersion graphite contacting conductivity) and B (graphite with a panel-mounted flow-switch manifold), through C and D for high-pressure contacting conductivity, E and F for 316SS contacting conductivity and G and H for electrodeless conductivity. For the WBLW, options include a boiler sensor with or without automatic temperature compensation rated 250 psi with a 20 ft cable, a condensate sensor with a 0.1 cell constant rated 200 psi, and a 10-constant boiler sensor for up to 100 mS/cm.

Applications and what to confirm before ordering

The W100W suits tower blowdown, boiler blowdown and condensate-return monitoring where a graphic display and three relays cover the control logic. For systems that also need pH, ORP or disinfection control, look at the Intuition-6 or Intuition-9, whose universal inputs and larger relay counts are described in the brochures.

Confirm the process pressure and temperature against the sensor ratings, the cable length, whether the controller should drive pumps directly (powered relays) or switch external starters (dry contacts), the plug standard, and whether the 4-20 mA record output is wanted. The brochure also lists accessories such as flow-switch manifolds, so state if a panel-mounted manifold is part of the scope.

How the Walchem W100W works

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the W100W

Mount the controller on a flat surface away from heat and vibration. Install the sensor in a flowing sample line. Wire the relays to the bleed valve and the feed pumps. Enter the set points and check each output. Clean the sensor at regular intervals.
