Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 Multi-Gas Monitor

Description

Overview

The Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 is a four-gas monitor with the portability and size of a single-gas instrument. It is aimed at operators who wear a gas monitor all day for personal protection but occasionally need to test a confined space before entry. The Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 detects up to four gases from a choice of catalytic bead and electrochemical sensors, and it can be ordered with or without an integral pump, or paired with the Ventis Slide-on Pump when sampling is needed only now and then.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 to oilfield service companies, refinery maintenance contractors, utilities and water operators in the Sultanate of Oman and other GCC countries. Our Muscat office helps buyers choose sensor and battery options, and we provide engineering support for chargers, pumps, calibration accessories and replacement sensors.

Detection Principle

Combustible gases are measured with a catalytic bead sensor. A heated bead oxidises flammable gas on its surface, and the small change in temperature and resistance is converted into a reading from 0 to 100% LEL in 1% steps; methane can alternatively be shown from 0 to 5% by volume. Oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide are measured by electrochemical cells, in which the target gas reacts at an electrode and produces a current proportional to its concentration.

On the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 the oxygen range is 0 to 30% by volume, carbon monoxide 0 to 1,000 ppm (also available as a CO/H2 low version that reduces hydrogen cross-sensitivity), hydrogen sulfide 0 to 500 ppm in 0.1 ppm increments, and nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide 0 to 150 ppm. Users can select alarm set points, latch alarms and disable instrument shutdown while in alarm, so the monitor matches the site safety procedure rather than the other way round.

Engineering Design of the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4

The case is polycarbonate with a protective rubber overmold and is rated IP66/67. The diffusion version with a slim extended lithium-ion battery measures 103 x 58 x 30 mm and weighs only 191 g; the pumped lithium-ion version measures 172 x 67 x 66 mm and weighs 389 g. Alarms combine ultra-bright LEDs, a loud audible alarm of 95 dB at 30 cm and a vibrating alarm, and readings appear on a backlit LCD.

Battery flexibility is a strong point of the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4. The slim extended lithium-ion battery gives about 22 hours at 20 °C without a pump, the extended-range lithium-ion pack gives about 20 hours without a pump or 12 hours with one, and a replaceable AAA alkaline pack provides about 8 hours without a pump or 4 hours with it. The Ventis Slide-on Pump attaches without tools, has its own battery and offers a sample draw of up to 50 feet; it is also compatible with the Ventis Pro5. Maintenance and usage data can be managed through iNet Control software, which saves time and reduces human error compared with manual record keeping.

Because the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 and the slide-on pump use the same batteries and chargers, a crew can carry spare packs that fit both units. Three battery choices for the pump make it flexible in the field, and the pump is offered in black or safety orange to match the monitor housing. Each Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 is supplied with a calibration cup (diffusion version) or sample tubing (pumped version) and a reference guide.

Key Features

Field teams choose the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 for the following reasons:

  • Four-gas protection in a body the size of a single-gas monitor, weighing 191 g in diffusion form.
  • Choice of diffusion, integral pump, or removable Ventis Slide-on Pump configurations.
  • Catalytic bead LEL sensor plus electrochemical O2, CO, CO/H2 low, H2S, NO2 and SO2 options.
  • User-selectable alarm set points, latching alarms and shutdown-in-alarm control.
  • Three-way alarm with bright LEDs, 95 dB audible signal and vibration.
  • IP66/67 polycarbonate case with a protective rubber overmold.
  • Lithium-ion or AAA alkaline battery options for flexible field logistics.
  • Four-year warranty on the monitor, pump and CO, H2S, O2 and LEL sensors for devices made after 2019, per the specification sheet.

Industrial Applications

The Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 suits the daily personal monitoring needs of operators and technicians on oil and gas production stations, pipeline crews, power and desalination plants, and municipal wastewater networks in Oman. A typical use is a technician who carries the Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 during routine rounds and then slides on the pump to check a manhole, valve pit or tank before entry. Its low weight makes it comfortable to wear for a full shift in the heat of the interior oilfields, and the alkaline option helps remote crews who cannot always recharge.

Where higher capability is required, the Industrial Scientific Ventis Pro5 multi-gas monitor adds a fifth sensor and wireless connectivity, while the MSA ALTAIR io4 connected detector offers a similar four-gas approach from another manufacturer. For H2S-only duties the Crowcon Gasman single gas detector is a simple alternative. Seven Star LLC supplies the genuine Industrial Scientific Ventis MX4 and its pumps and chargers to customers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, with regional engineering support.

About brand

Before anyone enters a vessel or breaks a flange, somebody checks the air with a gas monitor. Industrial Scientific, founded in 1985 in Pittsburgh, USA, concentrates on that job: portable gas detection and monitoring for workers and work areas. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Industrial Scientific gas detectors and accessories for refineries, plants and contractors in Oman and the GCC.

Industrial Scientific monitors listed

Three instruments are on this page. The Ventis Pro5 is a personal multi-gas monitor that, according to the manufacturer, reads up to five gases at once, has man-down and panic alarms, an optional pump and LENS wireless links between instruments. The MX6 iBrid is a multi-gas monitor for a larger sensor set. The Radius BZ1 is an area monitor, placed at a work site to watch the surrounding air.

Ordering Industrial Scientific gas monitors: what we need

These instruments are built to order around a sensor list. State each gas you need, for example LEL, O2, CO and H2S, and the LEL sensor type if your site standard names one. Say whether a pump is required, which battery, and the approval marking your site accepts. Add chargers, docking stations and test gas fittings if needed. For spare sensors, send the instrument model, its serial number and the sensor part number.
