Swagelok 40G Series One-Piece Ball Valve

Description

Overview

The Swagelok 40G Series is the current generation of Swagelok one-piece instrumentation ball valves in the 41G, 42G and 43G sizes. Each valve is machined from 316 stainless steel with a quarter-turn ball stem, a directional handle and a live-loaded packing, and is intended for on-off, switching and crossover duty in analyzer sample lines, instrument impulse tubing and small-bore process systems. The Swagelok catalog states that the 41G, 42G and 43G valves replace the original stainless steel 41, 42 and 43 series with equivalent dimensions and comparable materials.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Swagelok 40G Series One-Piece Ball Valve range with availability checks at quotation and engineering support in Muscat. Purchasers across Oman and the GCC can quote by ordering number, such as SS-41GS1, SS-42GS4 or SS-43GS4, or by size, flow pattern and options. This page describes the Swagelok 40G Series as a family; for the older original design see the Swagelok 40 Series Ball Valve page, and for a single sized valve see the dedicated SS-43GS4 page.

Working Principle

The Swagelok 40G Series operates by rotating a bored ball through ninety degrees between fully open and fully closed. In the 40G design the ball stem is a single piece, which keeps the stem and the orifice aligned, and a balanced-trunnion arrangement supports the packing and minimizes packing extrusion. The packing is a single-piece encapsulated modified PTFE element that does not need system pressure to make its seal, has virtually no dead space and allows bidirectional flow, which suits sample lines that are purged and cleaned often.

The top-loaded, live-loaded packing compensates for wear and thermal cycling. The Swagelok catalog says this reduces the need for packing adjustment, allows adjustment with the valve in line and improves thermal cycle performance in both environmental and heated-process applications. Swagelok advises that ball valves are designed to be used fully open or fully closed, and that a valve left uncycled for a period may show a higher initial actuation torque.

Engineering Design of the Swagelok 40G Series

The Swagelok 40G Series valve body is 316 stainless steel to ASTM A276 and A479, with a 316 stainless steel ball stem, powdered-metal 300 series stainless steel side rings, discs, gland and panel nut, S17700 springs and a nylon handle with a stainless steel insert. Packing is modified PTFE or, where ordered, UHMWPE. Wetted lubricant is silicone based. The 41G and 42G valves use eight springs and the 43G uses six. Packing adjustment needs an 8 mm deep-well socket on 41G and 42G valves and a 9 mm deep-well socket on the 43G.

Two-way straight and angle patterns and three-way switching valves are offered with fractional and metric Swagelok tube fitting ends, female and male NPT, VCO and VCR connections. Every Swagelok 40G Series valve is factory tested with nitrogen at 1000 psig (69 bar), or at its rated pressure if lower, and the seat test allows a maximum leak rate of 0.1 std cm³/min. Standard cleaning follows Swagelok SC-10, with SC-11 special cleaning available for ASTM G93 Level C cleanliness.

Industrial Applications

The Swagelok 40G Series is selected for analyzer sample conditioning, instrument isolation and vent points, gas chromatograph carrier and calibration gas lines, hydraulic and lube oil test points and utility panels. In Oman these duties are common at gas processing and refining units, LNG-related facilities, power and desalination plants and laboratories in the Sohar and Salalah industrial zones, where compact stainless steel valves must hold up under heat, vibration and frequent cycling.

Seven Star LLC supplies the 40G valves to maintenance teams, panel builders and EPC contractors across Oman and the wider GCC. Compatible items include the Swagelok 40 Series Ball Valve, Swagelok tube fittings and the Swagelok KPR series regulator. Because the Swagelok 40G Series uses standard Swagelok tube fitting ends, it connects directly to those fittings.

Also available: Swagelok SS-1RS4 integral bonnet needle valve.

Specific models in this range: Swagelok SS-43GS4 40G Series ball valve and Swagelok 40GX Series three-way ball valve.

About brand
Two-ferrule tube fittings made Swagelok a familiar name on instrument air headers, impulse lines and analyzer sample systems. The company has made fluid system components since 1947 and is based in Solon, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Swagelok tube fittings, ball valves, needle valves, quick-connects, face seal fittings and pressure regulators for plants in Oman, checking every ordering number against the manufacturer's catalog before an offer is made.

Swagelok product families listed here

The items on this page cover the small-bore components an instrument technician handles most often. Swagelok tube fittings join metric and fractional tubing without threading or welding. Swagelok ball valves are represented by the 40 series, the 40G series one-piece instrumentation ball valve (for example SS-43GS4) and the three-way pattern listed as 40GX. The SS-1RS4 is an integral bonnet needle valve from the 1 series. VCR metal gasket face seal fittings serve high-purity and vacuum lines, QC series quick-connects are used where lines are coupled and uncoupled often, and the KPR series is a pressure-reducing regulator.

Where Swagelok components are used

Typical duties are transmitter hook-ups, manifolds and impulse tubing, analyzer shelters and sample conditioning panels, chemical injection skids, gas cylinder panels in laboratories, and test benches. In oil and gas service across the GCC, the usual questions are material grade, pressure rating at temperature and, for sour service, whether the manufacturer offers the item to NACE MR0175 requirements.

Ordering Swagelok fittings and valves: what we need

A Swagelok ordering number carries most of the specification. In SS-43GS4, SS is 316 stainless steel, 43G identifies the valve series and size, and S4 is a 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting end connection. Send the complete ordering number including any suffix for handle, seat or cleaning option. If you do not have it, give us the tube outside diameter and wall thickness, body material, end connections on each port, working pressure and temperature, and the fluid. For a KPR regulator we also need inlet pressure, the outlet control range and the port configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Swagelok 40G Series and the original 40 series?
The Swagelok 40G Series covers the 41G, 42G and 43G stainless steel valves, which replace the original 41, 42 and 43 stainless steel series with equivalent dimensions and comparable materials. The 40G design adds a top-loaded, live-loaded packing with a balanced-trunnion ball stem and a single-piece encapsulated modified PTFE packing, which reduces the need for packing adjustment and improves thermal cycle performance.
What pressure and temperature can the Swagelok 40G Series handle?
The catalog rates the 43G straight-pattern valve to 3000 psig (206 bar) from -65 to 150 degrees F, falling to 2500 psig (172 bar) at 300 degrees F, while 41G and 42G valves and angle or three-way patterns are rated to 2500 psig (172 bar). Valves with UHMWPE packing are limited to 150 degrees F (65 degrees C), and valves with tube fitting ends may be limited by the tubing rating.
How is a 40G Series valve ordered?
Select the complete ordering number from the catalog, for example SS-41GS1 for a 1/16 in. valve, SS-42GS4 or SS-43GS4 for a 1/4 in. tube fitting valve. Insert E after the series letters for UHMWPE packing, add -A for an angle pattern, and add suffixes for handle color, locking bracket, special cleaning, sour gas service or production testing.
Can 40G Series valves be fitted with actuators?
Yes. The catalog lists pneumatic actuators, ISO 5211-compliant pneumatic actuators and electric actuators for the 40G series, and notes that couplings must be replaced when an older 41, 42 or 43 series actuated valve is changed to the 40G design. Valves for actuator mounting are supplied with no handle and no handle stop.
Can Seven Star LLC supply the Swagelok 40G Series in Oman and the GCC?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the Swagelok 40G Series ball valves on request, with engineering support in Muscat. Send the ordering number or the size, end connection, flow pattern and options you need, and we will return the catalog reference, availability and lead time for Oman and the GCC.
