Micropilot FMR52 Radar Level Transmitter
Description
Overview
The Micropilot FMR52 is Endress+Hauser’s radar level transmitter designed for applications in aggressive liquids, offering extraordinary advantages with its completely PTFE-filled and flush-mounted horn antenna. The FMR52 also serves as the sensor of choice for hygiene-sensitive applications in the food and life sciences industry, carrying ASME BPE, USP Class VI, 3-A, and EHEDG approvals.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Micropilot FMR52 on request to chemical processing, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical facilities across the Sultanate of Oman, Muscat, and the wider GCC. Micropilot is used for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids, pastes, and slurries, with measurement unaffected by changing media, temperature changes, gas blankets, or vapors that would confuse a contact-based level instrument.
Measurement Principle
The Micropilot FMR52 operates as a downward-looking time-of-flight (ToF) measuring system: radar impulses are emitted by the antenna, reflected off the product surface, and received again by the radar system, with the distance from the reference point (process connection) to the product surface computed from the time delay. Operating in the K-band at approximately 26GHz, the FMR52 achieves ±2mm accuracy across a maximum measuring range of 40m (131 ft), extending to 60m (197 ft) in extended configurations.
The flush-mounted, PTFE-encapsulated horn antenna design eliminates crevices or protrusions into the process, making it ideally suited to aggressive, corrosive, or hygienic media where a conventional metallic antenna would be unsuitable. The measurement remains reliable even in the presence of gas blankets, vapor layers, and changing dielectric properties, thanks to Multi-Echo Tracking evaluation.
Engineering Design of the Micropilot FMR52
The Micropilot FMR52 operates across a process temperature range of -196°C to +200°C (-321°F to +392°F) and a pressure range of -1 to 25 bar (-14.5 to 362 psi), with hardware and software developed according to IEC 61508 up to SIL3 in homogeneous redundancy. HistoROM data management provides fast and easy commissioning, maintenance, and diagnostics, while Heartbeat Technology supports cost-effective and safe plant operation across the entire instrument life cycle.
The transmitter is available with a dual-compartment housing in either plastic PBT or 316L stainless steel construction, with 2-wire 4-20mA HART output as standard and optional Bluetooth remote access via the SmartBlue app. A 4-line SD02 display with push buttons and data backup function supports local operation, and seamless integration into control or asset management systems is achieved through an intuitive, menu-guided operation concept.

FMR52 Antenna Sizes, Beam Angle and Measuring Range
The Micropilot FMR52 is supplied with a flush-mounted, PTFE-filled horn antenna in two sizes. The 50 mm (2 inch) antenna has a 3 dB beam angle of 18 degrees and the 80 mm (3 inch) antenna 10 degrees. In practical terms the beam diameter at 12 m distance is about 3.8 m for the small antenna and 2.1 m for the large one, so the 80 mm version is the better choice wherever internals or the tank wall lie close to the measuring path.
The standard device has a maximum measuring range of 40 m. The 60 m figure is only reached with the Advanced dynamics application package (order feature 540, option EM). For the 80 mm antenna in a storage vessel with a calm surface, Endress+Hauser gives 8 m, 15 m, 30 m and 40 m for medium groups A, B, C and D as standard, and 10 m, 20 m, 40 m and 60 m with Advanced dynamics. Moving surfaces and agitators reduce these values considerably.
Where the dielectric constant is low or the surface is turbulent, a stilling well or bypass is the remedy recommended by the manufacturer. In a stilling well the FMR52 measures up to 20 m in all medium groups from A to D; in a bypass 20 m applies to groups C and D. The device works in the K-band at about 26 GHz, which allows up to eight Micropilot transmitters in one tank.
FMR52 Process Connections, Pressure Limits and Mounting
All FMR52 process connections are PTFE clad, so only PTFE is wetted. For flanges from DN50 to DN100 (2 to 4 inch), DIN 11851 couplings and Tri-Clamp fittings, the permitted range is -196 to +200 °C at -1 to 25 bar. The large flanges (DN150, 6 and 8 inch) keep the 25 bar limit, but vacuum is only allowed up to +100 °C; between 100 and 200 °C the lower pressure limit is 0 bar gauge. The actual rating is always limited by the flange class selected.
Because the antenna is flush, a nozzle up to 500 mm high is acceptable for both antenna sizes. The PTFE flange cladding normally serves as the gasket between nozzle and device flange. The device should sit at least 15 cm from the tank wall. For loop design, the HART version needs 10.4 to 35 V at the terminals, 13 V minimum with switch output or flameproof electronics, and 3 V more when the Bluetooth module is fitted.
Why Choose Seven Star LLC for Hygienic Radar Level Measurement
A flush-mounted, PTFE-encapsulated antenna is specified precisely because a conventional metallic antenna would either corrode in an aggressive chemical service or fail a hygienic-design audit in a food or pharmaceutical vessel – getting the antenna material, process connection, and hygienic certificate combination wrong is a common and expensive ordering mistake. Seven Star LLC’s engineers confirm the exact process connection standard (tri-clamp, DIN, ASME BPE) and the required hygienic certificates against the customer’s actual vessel and industry auditor requirements before the Micropilot FMR52 is ordered. We also help plan spare transmitter electronics around the instrument’s SIL3-capable architecture for safety-relevant installations, and note that the optional Bluetooth module allows commissioning with the SmartBlue app without opening the process connection.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.
Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need
The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
