Emerson AMS Trex Device Communicator
Overview
The Emerson AMS Trex Device Communicator is a ruggedized handheld tool for configuring, calibrating, and diagnosing intelligent field devices directly in the plant. It supports instrumentation technicians and maintenance teams across Oman and the GCC working on HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, and WirelessHART instruments in oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and water treatment facilities.
Built to replace older handheld communicators with a modern touchscreen interface, the AMS Trex combines device configuration, troubleshooting, and documentation into a single portable unit, reducing the number of separate tools a field technician needs to carry between calibration and commissioning tasks.
Operating Principle
The AMS Trex communicates with field instruments using their native digital protocols — HART for device configuration and diagnostics, FOUNDATION Fieldbus for segment-level device communication, and WirelessHART for provisioning and network configuration of wireless field networks. An 800 MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor with 512 MB RAM runs the device’s software, presenting device parameters, diagnostic data, and configuration menus on a responsive touchscreen rather than the button-driven menus of legacy communicators.
Engineering Design of the Emerson AMS Trex
The unit is built around a 5.7-inch (14.5 cm) color VGA resistive touchscreen at 640×480 resolution with adjustable backlighting for outdoor and low-light field use. Internal storage combines 2 GB of onboard flash with 32 GB of extended flash capacity, enough to hold device configuration files, calibration records, and documentation for extensive plant inspection routes. A rechargeable lithium-ion power module provides more than 8 hours of typical field use per charge, with a 3-4 hour recharge time, and the enclosure carries an IP54 rating for protection against dust and splashing water on the plant floor.

Industrial Applications
Across Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah, the AMS Trex is used by instrumentation technicians to commission, calibrate, and troubleshoot smart transmitters, control valves, and other intelligent field devices during plant startups, turnarounds, and routine maintenance rounds in refineries, gas processing plants, and power stations. Its touchscreen interface and onboard documentation storage speed up device configuration compared to older text-menu communicators.
The unit’s WirelessHART provisioning capability also supports commissioning and maintaining wireless sensor networks used for tank-farm monitoring, remote asset condition monitoring, and expansion of instrumentation into areas without existing wired infrastructure, while IS-approved operation down to -20°C makes it suitable for hazardous-area field work.

AMS Trex Model Code Breakdown
The AMS Trex model string is assembled from fixed positions after the TREX base. Communication module: C for the Device Communicator module or L for the Device Communicator Plus module. Applications: H for HART only, or F for HART plus FOUNDATION Fieldbus. Power module: P for the rechargeable Li-Ion module. Certification: KL for ATEX, CSA and IECEx intrinsic safety, or NA for no approval. Radio: W for wireless (Wi-Fi and NFC) or 9 for none. Support: S1 or S3 for standard support of one or three years, P1 or P3 for premium support.
Option codes at the end can be combined: S adds the carrying case, R the Radar Master app and W the WirelessHART Provisioning app (both apps only on select models). Emerson gives TREX L H P KL W S3 S as a typical HART unit and TREX L F P KL W S3 S as a typical HART and Fieldbus unit. The base platform includes the AC adapter, USB cable, lead set, hand strap and approvals guide. Standard support covers technical support and software updates; premium support adds accidental damage coverage.
Standard or Plus Communication Module
The two communication modules differ in what the unit can do without other tools. The Device Communicator module (code C) has a HART terminal and a Fieldbus terminal for communication only, so the loop or segment must already be powered and a HART loop needs the correct resistance. The Device Communicator Plus module (code L) adds a HART + pwr terminal with built-in power supply and a selectable 250 or 500 Ω internal resistor, an mA terminal that works as an ammeter, and an FF + FF pwr terminal with power conditioner for one fieldbus device on the bench.

Choosing an AMS Trex Configuration
The AMS Trex is ordered with different protocol and software options, so start from the work your technicians actually do. Confirm which protocols are needed (HART only, or HART plus FOUNDATION Fieldbus and WirelessHART), whether the unit will be used in hazardous areas and which certification your site requires, and whether valve diagnostics or other application licenses are needed. It also helps to list the instrument manufacturers and models on site, so the device descriptions required for those instruments can be checked before the unit is deployed.
Getting Started and Field Commissioning
- Charge the battery fully and update the system software and device description library before first use in the field.
- For HART loops, connect across the loop with the correct loop resistance present, or use the loop power of the Device Communicator Plus module when testing a transmitter on the bench.
- For FOUNDATION Fieldbus, connect to the segment observing polarity and check segment health before changing any device settings.
- Record as-found and as-left configurations so every change is documented for the maintenance history.
- Coordinate with operations before writing parameters or placing a device out of service on a live control loop.
Integration with Asset Management
Configurations and records captured on the AMS Trex can be synchronized with Emerson’s AMS Device Manager, so field work becomes part of the plant’s central instrument records. This avoids transcribing calibration and configuration data by hand and gives reliability engineers a consistent audit trail.
Care and Troubleshooting
- No communication with a HART device: check loop resistance, lead connections and whether another HART master is already active on the loop.
- Device not recognized: the matching device description is probably missing; update the DD library.
- Short battery life: in hot climates, avoid leaving the unit in vehicles or direct sun, and store it charged in a cool place.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Instrument teams use the AMS Trex during plant commissioning, turnarounds and routine maintenance on oil and gas facilities, LNG and petrochemical plants, power stations and desalination sites, where large numbers of smart transmitters and valve positioners must be configured and verified efficiently.
