ROC809 Remote Operations Controller
Overview
The ROC809 is the nine-slot model of Emerson’s ROC800-Series remote operations controllers, microprocessor-based units that monitor, measure and control equipment in a remote environment. The product data sheet describes the ROC800 as ideal for applications requiring flow computation, Proportional, Integral and Derivative control loops, logic sequencing control and up to 12 meter runs. The ROC809 houses a fixed backplane that carries the central processing unit, a power input module, input and output modules and communication modules, so a complete remote terminal and flow computer is delivered in a single DIN-rail package.
As a supplier of Emerson products in Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the ROC809 Remote Operations Controller with the manufacturer datasheet and technical support with selection. Operators in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and the interior fields can source the controller, the power input module and the I/O cards from one supplier and keep spare modules on the shelf for fast replacement.
Operating Principle
The ROC809 works by scanning its modules, converting field signals into engineering values and executing the configured measurement, control and communication tasks on a 32-bit processor. The CPU is based on a Motorola MPC862 PowerQUICC PowerPC processor running at 65 MHz, with 16 MB of flash for the firmware image, 32 MB of SDRAM for execution, and 2 MB of battery-backed SRAM for historical data logs and configuration. A real-time operating system provides hardware and software memory protection, and a hardware watchdog resets the processor if it stops responding for three seconds.
Flow measurement is organized into meter runs and stations. Meter runs that share parameters such as the contract hour and gas data belong to the same station, so those values are entered once instead of once per run. The firmware keeps the last 450 events, the last 450 alarms and 35 days of hourly records per API Chapter 21.1, and the history database holds up to 240 points in 13 segments, giving more than 224,000 unique entries. Engineers can extend behavior with Function Sequence Tables built in ROCLINK 800, or with IEC 61131-3 programs created in DS800 Development Suite software when the license key is installed.
Engineering Design of the ROC809
The ROC809 measures 241 mm high by 244 mm wide by 174 mm deep and weighs 1.65 kg with the housing, backplane and CPU. Its polycarbonate and ABS housing has removable wire channel covers that protect the terminals, and modules are made of solvent-resistant thermoplastic polyester. Installation or replacement of any I/O or communication module needs only two captive screws accessible from the front, and some modules are hot-swappable, meaning a module can be replaced under power and the new one acquires the previous configuration.
The Series 2 architecture of the ROC809 adds more user C memory and a faster CPU, and lets AC I/O, Advanced Pulse, HART and MVS modules operate in any I/O slot. Power comes from a plug-in input module for 12, 24 or 30 Vdc, with a base unit draw of 88 mA, 102 mA or 99 mA respectively. The isolated I/O modules include analog input and output, discrete input and output, relay output, pulse input, RTD, thermocouple, HART and IEC 62591 WirelessHART interface cards, and extensive short-circuit protection removes the need for fuses on the I/O and communication modules.
Key Features
The ROC809 combines flow computation, control and communications in one rugged controller. The features below come from the official ROC800 product data sheet.
- Provides nine module slots, with the first three open to communication or I/O modules and the other six dedicated to I/O.
- Supports up to 12 meter runs with station grouping, using AGA or ISO calculations for orifice, turbine, ultrasonic and Coriolis meters through license keys.
- Offers up to six communication ports, including a local operator interface, Ethernet, RS-232 and three optional module ports.
- Runs ROC Plus and Modbus protocols, and the Ethernet port handles six ROC Plus connections, six Modbus slave connections and one Modbus master connection simultaneously.
- Archives data in a history database of 240 points in 13 segments, with separate time intervals and contract hours per segment.
- Applies multi-level role-based access with password encryption from firmware version 3.90, plus password limits on ROCLINK 800 log-on.
- Lets the ROC809 operate from –40 to 75 °C with low power consumption from internal 3.3 volt electronics.
- Carries CSA Class I, Division 2 and Zone 2 markings, with optional CE marking and ATEX certification for Europe-compliant projects.
Industrial Applications
The ROC809 is most often chosen where a single controller must serve as the station computer for several measurement points. Typical ROC809 uses include gas well and gathering-system supervision, compressor and separator control, multi-run metering stations with orifice or ultrasonic meters, and pipeline remote terminal units that report back to a SCADA master over Ethernet, serial or radio links. In the Sultanate of Oman these duties occur across upstream oil and gas fields, gas processing plants and the pipeline corridors that feed the Sohar and Salalah industrial zones.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the ROC809 to operators, EPC contractors, SCADA integrators and maintenance teams in Oman and the wider GCC. Buyers who need custody transfer accuracy can compare it with the FloBoss S600+ flow computer, those who need liquid batching functions can review the OMNI 3000/6000 series, and newcomers can read what a flow computer is before defining the I/O list.
