ROC800L Liquid Measurement Remote Operations Controller
Overview
The ROC800L is the liquid measurement edition of Emerson’s ROC800-Series remote operations controllers. It is a microprocessor-based controller that monitors, measures and controls equipment in a plant or remote environment, and the product data sheet describes it as ideal for any application requiring flow computation, Proportional, Integral and Derivative control loops, logic sequencing control and up to six liquid meter runs. What distinguishes the ROC800L is its set of factory-installed liquid measurement user programs, which provide American Petroleum Institute calculations in accordance with the Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards.
As the official trusted supplier for Emerson in Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the ROC800L Liquid Measurement Remote Operations Controller in both of its hardware versions, the nine-slot ROC809L and the expandable ROC827L. Terminal operators, pipeline companies and loading facilities in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah can order the controller with its I/O, communication cards and license keys from one local source.
Liquid Measurement Principle
The ROC800L measures liquid flowing through a meter and corrects the indicated volume for density, temperature and pressure. These liquid calculations are the first of four functions delivered by the factory programs. The second is batching, which lets an engineer configure and schedule multiple batches to record and control the flow of a liquid, with batch accuracy improved through retroactive calculation and re-calculation using user-defined variables. The third is proving, and the fourth is reporting, with printable reports that comply with API MPMS Chapters 12.2.2, 12.2.3 and 21.2, plus user-designed reports built in ROCLINK 800.
Meter proving is where the ROC800L saves the most field effort. It operates a four-way control valve, calculates a new meter factor and stores meter factor information on up to 24 products for each of up to six meters. Unidirectional, bidirectional, large volume, small volume and master meter proving are supported, and a prover densitometer is supported for inferred mass proving. Meter runs that share parameters such as fluid type and base temperature are grouped under stations, so configuration is entered once and reports can be generated per meter or consolidated per station.
Engineering Design of the ROC800L
The ROC800L hardware matches the Series 2 ROC800 platform. A 32-bit Motorola MPC862 PowerQUICC processor runs at 65 MHz, backed by 16 MB of flash for the firmware image and report files, 32 MB of SDRAM for execution and 2 MB of battery-backed SRAM for data logs and configuration. The firmware stores the last 450 events and 450 alarms, 35 days of hourly records, and a weights and measures database of up to 1000 events. The history database holds up to 240 points in 13 segments, giving more than 224,000 unique entries, and each segment can use its own archive interval and contract hour.
The ROC809L measures 241 mm by 244 mm by 174 mm and weighs 1.65 kg with housing, backplane and CPU, while the ROC827L is built from a 93.2 mm base unit, up to four 93.2 mm expansion backplanes and two 27.1 mm end caps. Power input modules are offered for 12 Vdc and 24 Vdc. The advanced pulse input module provides four pulse channels and two prover channels, which is the hardware that makes high-resolution prover counting possible. Short-circuit protection removes the need for fuses on the I/O and communication modules, and modules can be changed using two front captive screws.
Key Features
The ROC800L combines API liquid programs with the open I/O architecture of the ROC800 family. The following ROC800L features come from the official data sheet.
- Runs factory-installed liquid measurement programs for calculations, batching, proving and reporting to API MPMS requirements.
- Supports up to six liquid meter runs and six stations, plus up to six gas runs when an optional AGA license key is installed.
- Stores meter factors for up to 24 products on each of up to six meters and supports five proving methods.
- Offers up to nine I/O modules on the ROC809L or up to 27 on the ROC827L with expansion backplanes.
- Provides built-in LOI, Ethernet and RS-232 ports, with up to three optional communication modules for serial, modem or radio links.
- Uses ROC Plus and Modbus protocols, with Modbus host on all ports except the LOI and Ethernet ports.
- Protects access with role-based accounts and password encryption from firmware version 1.70.
- Operates between –40 and 75 °C and carries CSA Class I, Division 2 and Zone 2 markings.
Industrial Applications
The ROC800L belongs wherever a liquid hydrocarbon stream must be measured, batched and accounted for locally. Typical ROC800L uses are crude oil and refined product pipelines, tank farm transfer, truck and rail loading racks, marine loading arms and transfer lines that require meter proving against a prover loop. In the Sultanate of Oman the same duties arise at port terminals and storage facilities near Sohar and Salalah, at refinery interfaces and at production stations in the interior, where a rugged controller that also functions as a remote terminal unit reduces the equipment needed on the skid.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the ROC800L to operators, EPC contractors and measurement specialists across Oman and the wider GCC. If your project is gas rather than liquid dominated, compare the standard OMNI 3000/6000 series and the FloBoss S600+ flow computer, and read what a flow computer is to confirm the architecture before you buy.
