Phoenix Contact QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 3-Phase Power Supply

Description

QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 three-phase power supply, 24 V DC 20 A

The QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 (item number 2904622) is the three-phase member of the QUINT POWER fourth generation. It takes a 3 x 400 to 500 V AC supply and delivers 24 V DC at 20 A, which is 480 W, with the same SFB technology, boost reserves and preventive monitoring as the single-phase types. A three-phase input is the natural choice in plants where the control cabinet is fed directly from the 400 V distribution board, because the load is shared across three phases and the unit rides through mains dips better than a single-phase unit of the same size. Seven Star LLC supplies the QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Decoding the QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 designation

  • QUINT4-PS: QUINT POWER power supply, fourth generation.
  • 3AC: three-phase AC input (the data sheet states 3 x 400 V AC to 500 V AC).
  • 24DC: 24 V DC nominal output.
  • 20: 20 A nominal output current.

Why choose the three-phase QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20

Compared with the single-phase QUINT4-PS/1AC/24DC/20 at the same 480 W, the QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 draws only about 1 A per phase at 400 V AC, so the input cabling and upstream protection can be smaller, and the 33 ms mains buffering is longer than the 20 ms guaranteed by the single-phase unit. It is also lighter, at 1.1 kg against 1.3 kg. The trade-off is that the supply must be a true three-phase source; a single-phase site cannot feed it. The data sheet also lists the unit with DC feeding on the input side, with its own protection table for DC operation, so confirm the actual source with the manufacturer note before using a DC input.

Boost reserves and SFB behaviour

Like all QUINT4 power supplies the 20 A three-phase unit can run at 125 % of nominal power as a static boost (25 A), supply 30 A for five seconds as a dynamic boost, and release 120 A for 15 ms to trip a downstream circuit breaker. The static boost is useful when several contactors, solenoid valves and I/O blocks are energised together; the dynamic boost covers capacitive inrush of drives and power-supply modules; and the SFB pulse keeps one shorted branch from pulling the common 24 V bus down. Control deviation is specified as below 0.5 % for static load change and below 3 % for a dynamic load change from 10 to 90 %.

System fit and sibling types

Within the range the QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 sits beside the QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/40/CO, which covers a higher current, and the single-phase QUINT4-PS/1AC/24DC/20 for sites with one-phase supply. It can be paralleled for redundancy or increased capacity, and the data sheet names accessories such as universal wall adapters for high vibration, NFC programming, surge protection plugs and multi-channel electronic circuit breakers for splitting the 24 V into protected branches.

Ordering and selection checklist

  • Confirm that the cabinet is fed by a three-phase network within 3 x 400 to 500 V AC including tolerance.
  • Sum continuous load and keep margin so that the unit stays out of boost in normal operation.
  • Check the input protection selection in the data sheet (circuit breaker characteristic and rating) against the 3 x 0.99 A draw and inrush.
  • Decide on redundancy: two QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 in parallel, or a unit plus a redundancy module.
  • Verify marine or hazardous-location approvals needed by the project against the list above.

Installation and commissioning notes

Install the QUINT4-PS/3AC/24DC/20 on a DIN rail with free space for air flow, connect the three phases and PE, set the output voltage to compensate cable losses and configure Out 1, Out 2 and the relay contact for the PLC. Because the output ripple is stated as below 60 mV peak to peak, sensitive instrumentation is normally comfortable on the same bus, but keep analogue loops on separate branches. After start-up check the LED bar graph under real load, simulate a branch short circuit if the project requires proof of selectivity, and record the set voltage in the commissioning file.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Three-phase 24 V supplies of this size are common in motor control centre control sections, compressor and pump skids, water treatment and desalination panels, substation auxiliary cabinets and process packages where the main supply is 400 V AC. The ability to start at very low temperature and the marine approvals help on offshore units, while the high mains buffering helps where supply quality is variable.

Ordering Phoenix Contact components: what we need

Phoenix Contact items are ordered by a seven-digit order number together with the type designation, both printed on the side of the module. Send both, plus the quantity. If the number is unreadable, send the type text and a photo. For power supplies, state input voltage, output current and whether the unit runs in parallel or with a redundancy module. For buyers in the GCC replacing an older unit, we check the manufacturer's documentation for the listed successor type.
