Overview
The Masoneilan 78400 API 6A is the high-pressure version of the LincolnLog severe service control valve from Baker Hughes, offered as the 78400 globe and 18400 angle designs. It is available in sizes up to 6 in. and is designed to meet the API 6A standard for high-pressure wellhead-type duties, with forged bodies rated for operation up to 15K psi. The LincolnLog multi-stage trim lets the valve throttle large pressure drops without the erosion and cavitation damage that would ruin a conventional single-stage trim.

Operating Principle of the Masoneilan 78400 API 6A
In the Masoneilan 78400 API 6A the LincolnLog trim provides a smooth modified linear control characteristic with clearance flow capacity over the first 15 percent of valve travel. The multi-stage clearance-flow concept prevents high pressure drops from acting across the seating area while the valve throttles at low lifts, which extends trim life significantly and gives dependable shutoff when it is needed. Throttling stability and performance at low lifts also improve, while capacity control remains smooth, accurate and continuous from 15 to 100 percent of plug travel.
Controllability extends from the maximum rated Cv down to the minimum controllable Cv for each valve size, giving typical turndown ratios of 50:1. The standard flow direction is flow-to-open. Eight-stage and ten-stage trims are available as standard options when the service needs additional pressure drop stages.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 78400 API 6A
In the Masoneilan 78400 API 6A the globe or angle body is forged. The body and bonnet are joined by a bolted joint with a metallic VG seal that is both self-energized and pressure-energized, which keeps leakage through the joint low and is rated for pressures up to 15K psi in operation. The standard packing flange and follower are designed as one piece for better flange stiffness, and both standard and fugitive emission packing options are offered, with PTFE packing listed for the standard design.
Body and bonnet materials are F6NM stainless steel, F51 duplex stainless steel, F55 duplex stainless steel and Nickel-alloy Inconel 718. Lifting lugs are standard for safe handling. Actuation is by a spring diaphragm actuator (standard 87/88) or a cylinder actuator (51/52/53), with an optional handwheel, and the fact sheet gives a cross-sectional cutaway of the 6 in. size.

The Masoneilan 78400 API 6A is intended for high-pressure severe service applications where API 6A compliance is specified and where a large pressure drop must be split across several stages. The fact sheet attaches three operating notes that should be built into any specification: the valve should be closed only for a short period because long closure risks damaging trim parts, service above 800 psi per stage pressure drop carries a high erosion risk and calls for regular servicing intervals, and F51 construction is limited to the API 10K body rating.
