Masoneilan 80386 Three-Way Diverting Control Valve

Description

Overview

Within the Baker Hughes Masoneilan 80000 Series of three-way control valves, the Masoneilan 80386 is the diverting version. In the 80000 numbering system the seat type digit 6 identifies it, which gives the model number 80386. Baker Hughes states that on diverting service the valve splits one inlet stream into two outlets, or sends the whole flow to either outlet port. The Masoneilan 80386 has a single common connection through which the process enters and two branch connections that feed two parallel destinations, for example a heat exchanger and its bypass.

Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of Masoneilan products in Oman, offers the Masoneilan 80386 to power plants, process plants, district cooling systems and refineries in the GCC where one valve and one actuator must route flow between two paths. Our Muscat valve team checks the fluid, pressure, temperature, split ratio and pipe layout before a formal RFQ is raised.

Diverting Principle of the Masoneilan 80386

Like the combining model, the Masoneilan 80386 is a dual seated design in which a single plug moves between two seat rings and flow tends to open the valve at both ports. In diverting service the common port C is the inlet, and the lower port L and the upper port U are the outlets. Baker Hughes marks these letters on the connections to avoid mistakes in piping. As the plug of the Masoneilan 80386 moves, the Cv between C and one outlet rises while the Cv between C and the other falls, so that the total remains equal to the rated Cv. For a 6 inch valve with a rated Cv of 270 the table gives 27 and 243 at 10 percent travel, 135 and 135 at mid-stroke and 243 and 27 at 90 percent travel.

The Baker Hughes flow direction table lists the Masoneilan 80386 for diverting service in sizes of 1.5 to 12 inch (40 to 300 mm) with flow-to-open at both ports. The same table lists a model 803851 for diverting service in the 0.75 and 1 inch sizes with flow-to-close, and a note adds that these two small sizes are not available in the 80386 version: the combining version 80385 is used in their place, and the factory is consulted for details. A buyer who needs a small diverting valve in place of the Masoneilan 80386 should therefore ask for the combining body to be checked for the duty.

Plug and Body Design of the Masoneilan 80386

The plug of the Masoneilan 80386 differs from the combining plug, which is why the manual and the materials tables mark some parts as required for model 80386 only. The diverting plug is built from an upper skirt (4U), a shank (4SK), a plug gasket (4G), a lower skirt (4L) and plug locknuts (4N), and the bottom flange of the valve body carries the lower seat ring. In maintenance of the Masoneilan 80386, a wrench is applied to the machined flats on the upper guide section of the plug to stop it rotating while the locknuts are removed, and the lower skirt and gasket are detached. For lapping, the entire valve body is assembled with the packing, excluding the bottom flange of the diverting valve.

The Masoneilan 80386 is heavily guided at the top of the plug and in the seat ring locations, and large flow galleries give high capacity with low pressure recovery; the critical flow factor FL is 0.90 to 0.92. Sizes of 1.5 to 12 inch are available for the Masoneilan 80386 with ASME Class 150, 300 and 600 and the same range of bodies as the combining valve: carbon steel WCC, stainless steel CF8M and chrome-moly WC9, plus a NACE version to MR0103. The characteristic is linear with a 50 to 1 Cv ratio. The 12 inch size is paired with the 37/38 actuator because its travel exceeds 2.5 inch.

Capacity and Dimensions of the Masoneilan 80386

The Masoneilan 80386 is rated at Cv 21 in the 1.5 inch size, 36 at 2 inch, 75 at 3 inch, 124 at 4 inch, 270 at 6 inch, 480 at 8 inch, 750 at 10 inch and 1080 at 12 inch, with orifice diameters from 1.5 in (38.1 mm) to 10.5 in (267 mm) and travels of 0.8 to 3.5 inch. The face-to-face dimension A is the same as the combining model, 8.74 in (222 mm) for 1.5 inch Class 150 raised face and 28.78 in (731 mm) for 12 inch, but dimension B is larger because the lower flange is deeper: 7.01 in for 1.5 inch rising to 22.05 in for 12 inch in Class 150, compared with 6.26 in and 17.91 in for the combining valve.

Fitting the EB extension bonnet raises dimension C from 6.10 in to 10.75 in on the 1.5 inch valve and from 20.87 in to 27.05 in on the 12 inch valve. In the 1.5 inch Class 150 size the body sub-assembly with standard bonnet weighs 90 lb (41 kg), and in the 12 inch size it weighs 2875 lb (1307 kg). The standard bonnet is good from -20°F to +450°F (-29°C to +232°C); with graphite packing the extension bonnet reaches +800°F (+427°C). Seats are Class II as delivered, and Class III or IV can be arranged for the service.

Key Features

Key attributes of the Masoneilan 80386 as a flow-splitting valve:

  • Diverting service with a common inlet and two outlets, so one valve splits flow between two lines or sends it entirely to one.
  • Both outlets are flow-to-open on a dual seated plug, which keeps the valve steady while it throttles between the two branches.
  • Multi-piece plug of upper skirt, shank, gasket, lower skirt and locknuts for model 80386.
  • Guiding at the top and in the seat rings, wide flow galleries, FL of 0.90 to 0.92 and a 50 to 1 Cv ratio.
  • Sizes of 1.5 to 12 inch with rated Cv from 21 to 1080 and ASME Class 150 to 600.
  • Carbon steel, stainless steel and chrome-moly bodies, with NACE MR0103 construction available.
  • Shut-off is Class II unless Class III or IV is agreed at order.
  • Options include extension bonnet, Low-E packing, lubricator, limit stops, oxygen cleaning and electric actuators.

Industrial Applications

Diverting valves are used where a single stream must be shared between two paths under control: routing hot water or process fluid through a heat exchanger or around it, splitting cooling water between two consumers, sending a product stream to one of two receiving tanks, and diverting condensate or return flow to a cooler. In Oman, the Masoneilan 80386 suits the district cooling plants and desalination units of the Batinah coast, the process heat exchangers of the refinery and petrochemical area at Sohar, and utility loops in the Salalah industrial zone.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.
