Lovato CN2011220 Modular Contactor 20 A, 220 V AC/DC Coil
Description
Lovato CN2011220 modular contactor, 20 A, 220 V AC/DC coil
The Lovato CN2011220 is a one-module DIN-rail contactor rated 20 A for resistive loads and 9 A for AC-3 motor duty, with a coil that accepts 220 V AC or DC. It is intended for lighting, heating and small-load switching in distribution boards. Seven Star LLC supplies the CN2011220 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The code CN is the modular contactor family, 20 the thermal rating in amperes, 11 the contact arrangement and 220 the coil voltage. The data sheet lists two poles and a one NO plus one NC auxiliary count, so the arrangement should be confirmed on the label for each application. Sibling parts such as the CN2020220 and the CNM2020220 use other contact arrangements or control features.

How a modular contactor differs from a power contactor
Standard power contactors are built for motor duty and have a short operating time, strong arc chambers and a large frame. A modular contactor takes a single DIN module and is optimised for quiet operation and low coil consumption in building installations. Its coil draws only 2.5 W at all times, so many units can be fed from a small supply, and the long mechanical life of 3 million operations suits frequent switching of lighting circuits.
The coil operates on either AC or DC at 220 V, which gives flexibility: a supply from the mains or from a 220 V DC source behaves the same. The closing time of up to 45 ms and the opening time of up to 50 ms are slower than a power contactor, which is acceptable for lighting and heating but unsuitable for fast cycles.
CN2011220 in distribution boards
Place the contactor beside circuit breakers on the same rail. A typical chain is a miniature circuit breaker, the CN2011220 as a load switch, and a timer, a photocell or a PLC output that controls the coil. It can also form the output stage for load-shedding schemes, with several contactors dropped in sequence when a generator is carrying the board.
CN2011220 selection checklist
- Load current of 20 A or less for resistive loads, 9 A for motor duty
- Coil voltage of 220 V AC or DC
- Contact arrangement of one NO and one NC as listed
- Lighting inrush: capacitive or LED loads can exceed the rating
- Minimum load of 17 V and 50 mA for reliable contact
- Temperature inside the board up to 55 °C
- Conductor size, up to 10 mm² at the power terminals
Installing and maintaining the CN2011220
Snap the contactor onto a 35 mm rail, tighten the power terminals to no more than 1.2 Nm and the coil terminals to 0.6 Nm using a PZ2 driver. Leave a small gap beside heavily loaded modules, since each pole dissipates about 1.7 W at 20 A.
Hum from the coil, flickering lights or hot terminals are signs of low control voltage or loose wiring. Because the life is rated against operations, a counter in the control system helps to schedule replacement before contact wear causes trouble.
Typical CN2011220 applications in Oman and the GCC
In the region, modular contactors control street and facade lighting, car park lighting, water heaters, electric trace heating and ventilation stages in buildings. High room temperatures reduce the margin on the 55 °C limit, so boards in plant rooms should be ventilated and loaded below the full 20 A.
Modular contactors in this family
| Part | Current | Coil | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| CN2011220 | 20 A | 220 V AC/DC | This part |
| CN2020220 | 20 A | 220 V AC/DC | Other contact arrangement |
| CNM2020220 | 20 A | 220 V | With manual override |
| CN2011024 | 20 A | 24 V | Low-voltage coil |
Lighting loads deserve extra thought. LED drivers and electronic ballasts have a high inrush current for a very short time, and a number of them in parallel can exceed the contact capability of a 20 A modular contactor even when the steady current is small. Where large lighting groups are switched, split them over several contactors or choose one with a higher inrush capability. Heating loads are easier: resistive current is steady and within the listed AC-1 figure, provided the board does not run hotter than the temperature limits in the table. Label each contactor in the board, since several identical units usually sit next to each other.

Site conditions in Oman for the CN2011220
Low-voltage switching and protection devices in Oman often sit in motor control centres and outdoor panels where internal temperatures are high for much of the year. When you select the CN2011220, check its rated values at your real ambient temperature, as stated in the manufacturer documentation, and confirm the coordination with upstream protection and with the motor or load it serves. Short-circuit levels differ from site to site, so verify the breaking capacity required at the point of installation.
Standardising ratings and coil voltages across a project reduces the number of spare part numbers that need to be stocked. Keeping a small stock of the CN2011220 and recording settings such as trip ranges or ramp times shortens repair work during a breakdown.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.
Where Lovato products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
