KOBOLD NRE 80 GHz Non-Contact Radar Level Transmitter

Description

80 GHz radar for tanks, sumps and wells with a small antenna

The KOBOLD NRE family are two-wire 80 GHz (W-band) FMCW radar transmitters for non-contact level measurement of liquids, emulsions and large-particle bulk solids. The 80 GHz signal allows a small antenna and a narrow beam angle, which helps in narrow nozzles and tanks with internals, and millimetre waves can be used through a plastic tank roof and in a vacuum. The NRE-4 is the compact line with a PBT, aluminium or stainless steel housing and a plug-in graphic display; the NRE-7 is the integrated all-plastic design with an IP68 fixed cable.

Both lines measure distance and calculate level, volume, mass and open-channel flow, and the threshold management feature suppresses false and interfering echoes. The medium must have a dielectric constant above 1.9; the datasheet lists crude oil at 2.1, gasoline at 2.3 and water at 80.

Choose the NRE-4 where a metal antenna, higher pressure or high temperature is needed, such as hot hydrocarbon tanks. The NRE-7 suits sumps, wells, chemical tanks and water applications where an all-plastic, fully sealed unit is wanted.

Ordering the NRE

The NRE-4 example in the datasheet is NRE-4 1 S P R25 A0K 0. The range code is 1 (10 m), 2 (20 m) or 3 (30 m); the version is S (standard) or H (high temperature); the antenna and housing letter combines the antenna material with a PBT, aluminium or stainless housing; then the connection, the output code (A for 4 to 20 mA HART, R with relay; 0 or 1 for without or with display; K, I or J for no approval, ATEX Ex ia or IECEx Ex ia) and an option. The NRE-7 code adds the cable length in 1 m steps up to 30 m. Some Ex ta D codes and the 30 m range are marked in preparation, so confirm availability before ordering.

Confirm before ordering: the dielectric constant of the product, the minimum measuring distance for the antenna length, the ambient and process temperature against the Ex temperature class, and whether foam, condensate or agitators could disturb the beam.

About brand

KOBOLD Messring GmbH is a German instrumentation manufacturer based in Hofheim am Taunus, founded in 1980 by Klaus J. Kobold. It develops and manufactures instruments for monitoring, measuring and regulating flow, pressure, level and temperature, and the international KOBOLD group of companies serves virtually all sectors of industry.

KOBOLD flow and level instruments

The KOBOLD range covers Coriolis, thermal mass, magnetic inductive, turbine, oval gear, oscillation and variable area flow meters and flow switches, together with guided wave radar, 80 GHz radar, magnetostrictive, tuning fork and bypass level instruments. Many models carry ATEX or IECEx approvals, and several offer HART, Modbus or IO-Link communication.

Requesting KOBOLD instruments from Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists selected KOBOLD flow and level instruments for oil and gas, water, power and process plants in Oman and the GCC. Send the model code, measuring range, process connection and approvals needed, and Seven Star LLC will prepare a quotation from the KOBOLD datasheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the measuring range of the KOBOLD NRE?
Up to 30 m by order code, with 10 m, 20 m or 30 m ranges; the 30 m range is marked in preparation in the datasheet.
What accuracy does the NRE reach?
±2 mm on the 20 m range with the 7° beam, and ±5 mm on the 10 m range, for an ideal reflecting surface.
Which media can the NRE measure?
Liquids, emulsions and large-particle bulk solids with a dielectric constant above 1.9.
What is the difference between NRE-4 and NRE-7?
NRE-4 is the compact line with a metal or plastic housing, up to 40 bar and +180 °C; NRE-7 is the integrated plastic design for 3 bar, +80 °C and IP68.
Is there an Ex version of the NRE?
Yes. NRE-4 and NRE-7 are listed with ATEX Ex ia marking for gas and dust, and IECEx Ex ia codes are in the order code.
