Brand: Hilti
Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan GPR Concrete Scanner
Description
The Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan is a ground-penetrating-radar concrete scanner for locating rebar, tendons, metal and plastic conduits, glass-fibre cables, voids and wood in dry concrete up to a depth of 300 mm. Hilti describes it as an efficient concrete scanner for structural analysis and for locating embedded objects in multiple layers, with a real-time view into the concrete and automatic image generation for on-site evaluation.
Scanning concrete before coring, drilling and sawing
Hilti lists three scan modes: Quickscan detection, Quickscan recording and Imagescan. The scanner shows a top view and cross sections of the scan in 2D and 3D for object mapping and multilayer identification, and a detailed monitor for on-site analysis, with PC software for later evaluation and documentation. Typical uses given are minimising hits on concealed objects when drilling anchor holes or through holes, breaking out openings, diamond coring and sawing, rebar extension for post-installed rebar connections, and inspection of floors, decks, slabs, balconies, tunnels and bridges.

How the three scan modes are used
Quickscan detection shows object position directly during the scan; the operator moves the scanner at least 32 cm to each side over the same path and marks the object position on the concrete at the marking notch. Quickscan recording covers a long path up to 10 m, with objects viewable in plan or cross section afterwards. Imagescan builds an image of an area by scanning along paths guided by an adhesive reference grid. The manual states that scan results can be affected by dampness, metal-containing construction materials, aluminium-foil-backed insulation, multiple layers, cavities and strong electromagnetic fields, so building plans should also be consulted before drilling.
Selection and ordering checks
Confirm the kit required, the number of battery packs, the grid sizes and whether the software and data transfer accessories are needed. Radar scanners are subject to local radio regulations, and the manual asks users to check for sensitive radio sites such as airfields before scanning, so confirm approvals for the country of use. Compare the PS 300 Ferroscan and PS 85 wall scanner where a different depth or detection method suits the job.

About brand
Hilti is the Liechtenstein construction technology company for fastening, anchoring, firestop, installation and power tool systems. The brothers Martin and Eugen Hilti opened a small mechanical workshop in Schaan, Liechtenstein, in 1941, and the company turned to fastening technology after Martin Hilti acquired a fastening patent in 1948. Hilti is still headquartered in Schaan and controlled by the Martin Hilti Family Trust, created in 1980.
