Hilti AG 30D-22 Cordless 230 mm Angle Grinder

The Hilti AG 30D-22 is a cordless 230 mm (9 in) angle grinder on the Nuron 21.6 V battery platform, with a dead-man switch and a rotatable rear handle. Hilti says its brushless motor delivers as much power as a 2200 W corded grinder, and the tool body weighs 5.4 kg.

Large-disc cutting and weld removal without a cable

Hilti lists cutting concrete, masonry, roof tiles and stone, cutting rebar, pipes and steel beams, and weld removal, notching, grinding, deburring and finishing metal surfaces. For maintenance shutdowns and steel erection where a 230 mm disc is needed far from a socket, the cordless format removes the extension lead and generator.

A centrally mounted battery shifts weight forward for more stable control, the rear handle rotates 180 degrees, and three-dimensional Active Torque Control gives protection against kickback in any direction. Smart Power is listed in the safety and performance features. The body is 563 x 121 x 192 mm.

Dust hood rules, wheels and ordering notes

The operating instruction lists a double-sided cutting guard for cut-off wheels, a standard guard for cutting and grinding, a guard for grinding wheels, and a DC-EX 230/9 in dust hood with carriage as an accessory. It states the dust hood may be used for cutting and slitting mineral materials only and that using it on metal is prohibited. Wheels must be resin-bonded and fibre-reinforced, up to 230 mm in diameter.

The operating instruction also states that diamond slitting wheels must have a slot width between segments of no more than 10 mm and a negative cutting angle, a detail to check when buying diamond wheels for concrete cutting.

Setting up the grinder before each job

With the battery removed, choose the guard that matches the task, as listed in the operating instruction, and fit it so that it sits between the operator and the disc. Check that the wheel is marked for a permissible speed at least equal to the 6500 rpm no-load speed of the tool, that its diameter does not exceed 230 mm, and that it is free from cracks, chips or moisture damage. Tighten the flange as the manual describes and only then insert the battery.

Position the rotatable rear handle for the cutting direction and body posture needed, so that the operator can hold the tool with both hands and stand clear of the cutting line. Run the grinder briefly at no load in a safe direction to confirm that the disc turns smoothly without vibration before starting the cut.

Safe use on shutdown and construction sites

A 230 mm disc removes material quickly and throws sparks and fragments a long way, so set up a clear work zone and keep flammable materials, gas lines and other trades away from the spark path. Hot-work permits normally apply on process plants, and fire watch requirements should be confirmed with the site before cutting starts. Wear eye and face protection, hearing protection appropriate to the stated sound pressure level, gloves and suitable clothing.

When cutting concrete, masonry or stone, the dust can contain crystalline silica. Use the dust hood with a suitable extractor for mineral materials as the manual permits, or another dust control method required by the site, and wear respiratory protection. Never use the dust hood for metal cutting.

Battery and tool care in Oman heat

On outdoor sites in Oman and the GCC, tools and batteries left in direct sun or inside closed vehicles can become very hot. Store Nuron batteries in shaded, ventilated areas, let a hot battery cool before charging, and keep chargers out of dusty and wet locations. Bring enough charged batteries to the work face so that cutting can continue while others are recharged in a controlled area.

Fine sand and grinding dust enter motor vents and the guard area. After the shift, remove the battery and clean the housing and vents with a dry brush or low-pressure air, check that the guard and rear handle are secure, and look for damage to the body. Remove worn or damaged wheels from service rather than using them down to the flange.

The AG 30D-22 suits crews that regularly need full 230 mm cutting depth away from power outlets.
