Hilti SF 30M-22 Cordless Magnetic Drill Press

The Hilti SF 30M-22 is a cordless magnetic drill press for steel, using a permanent magnet and annular cutters to drill holes up to 35 mm in diameter. It runs on the 22 V Nuron platform, weighs 12.9 kg without battery and offers six speed stages from 200 to 520 rpm, which makes it a practical answer for steel fabrication and erection where mains power or a cord is a problem.

Hilti lists core drilling with annular cutters up to 35 mm diameter and 50 mm thickness, thread tapping up to M14, countersinking up to 31 mm, and drilling or reaming with twist drill bits up to 18 mm. The chuck is a quick-release 3/4 in Weldon type, and the control panel is moulded from a single piece of silicone to resist chip collection.

The magnet is mechanically activated and operates independently of the battery, so the tool stays held if the battery is removed or runs flat; that is how Hilti describes protection against tool drops. Hilti states that a B 22-290 battery drills up to 90 holes per charge in 12 mm thick S235 steel with a 20 mm cutter. Reverse rotation is provided for thread tapping.

Magnetic drills only hold firmly on clean, flat, sufficiently thick ferromagnetic steel, so confirm plate thickness, surface condition and any paint or scale before relying on the magnet. The operating instruction covers the six speed stages; select a lower speed for larger cutters and a higher stage for smaller cutters and twist drills.

Begin with the largest hole the job needs. The tool is rated for annular cutters up to 35 mm diameter and 50 mm material thickness, tapping up to M14 and twist drilling up to 18 mm, so list the hole sizes in your connection details and check they fall within these limits. Setting up and drilling safely

• Clean the steel surface of scale, spatter, paint and debris where the magnet will sit, and check that the material is flat and thick enough for a firm hold.
• Activate the mechanical magnet and check the hold before starting the cut; on vertical or overhead work, follow site rules and the operating instruction.
• Fit an annular cutter with a 3/4 in Weldon shank, choose the speed stage to suit cutter size, and feed steadily without forcing the cut.
• Use coolant suited to annular cutting, and clear chips from the work area and the tool regularly.
• Use reverse rotation only for backing out a tap, as described in the operating instruction.

Care of the tool in GCC conditions

Steel yards and erection sites in Oman are hot, dusty and often humid near the coast. The operating temperature range runs from -17 to 60 deg C and storage from -20 to 70 deg C, so avoid leaving the tool or batteries in closed vehicles or direct sun for long periods. Brush metal chips and dust off the magnet face and control panel after each job, since swarf on the magnet base reduces contact with the work surface. Keep the tool in its case between jobs, and inspect cutters for wear so that blunt cutters do not overload the drive.
