Hilti AG 230-24D 230 mm Angle Grinder
Description
The Hilti AG 230-24D is a 2400 W corded 230 mm (9 in) angle grinder with a deadman switch, a rotatable rear grip and a long-lasting carbon brush. It cuts to 68 mm depth, runs at 6500 rpm no-load and weighs 6.5 kg, making it the large-disc grinder in the Hilti corded range for structural steel, heavy plate and concrete cutting.
Large-disc grinding and cutting for structural steel and concrete
Hilti lists cutting and grinding of steel and metal, cutting concrete, and slitting to install cable conduits in concrete and brick. Active Torque Control stops the tool body spinning if the disc jams, Hilti Smart Power adjusts output to the material and protects the motor, and Active Vibration Reduction makes the tool much less tiring in daily use.
A rugged optional dust removal hood, soft grips and an adjustable side handle are listed. The rotatable grip lets the operator turn the handle for flat or vertical cuts. The dead-man trigger releases the disc drive when the switch is let go, which is the usual requirement for heavy grinders on industrial sites.

Wheel rules and ordering checks
Per the operating instruction only resin-bonded, fibre-reinforced discs with a maximum diameter of 230 mm, approved for at least 6500 rpm and 80 m/s, may be used. The listed wheel types are abrasive cut-off wheels (2.5 mm maximum thickness), diamond cut-off wheels for mineral materials (3 mm) and abrasive grinding discs (6.4 mm). Use the guard with cover plate, or a fully enclosing dust hood, when cutting with abrasive cut-off wheels.
Confirm the supply voltage and plug when requesting a quotation, and whether you need the optional dust hood. A 6.5 kg grinder is a two-hand tool; the cordless AG 30D-22 offers the same 230 mm disc without a cord at a body weight of 5.4 kg, but with batteries sold separately.

When a 230 mm grinder is the right tool
The AG 230-24D earns its weight on jobs where the 68 mm cutting depth is actually needed: cutting through thick base plates, trimming heavy sections on steel erection work, opening concrete for pipe or cable penetrations, and bevelling plate edges ahead of welding. For lighter work such as deburring, cleaning welds on thin sheet or cutting small brackets, a smaller grinder from the range table is quicker to handle and less tiring. Many maintenance teams therefore keep one large-disc grinder per crew alongside several 125 mm tools rather than using the 230 mm unit for everything.
Match the disc to the job before the tool leaves the store. Cut-off wheels for steel, diamond blades for concrete and masonry, and thicker grinding discs for stock removal each need the correct guard. Keep the guard with cover plate and the dust hood together with the grinder so that the right combination is always available on site.
Setting up before the first cut
- Check the cable, plug and strain relief for cuts or crushing, and confirm that the site supply matches the tool rating.
- Fit the side handle and set the rotatable rear grip for the cut direction, horizontal or vertical, before switching on.
- Mount the disc with the flanges supplied, tighten it as described in the operating instruction and adjust the guard so it sits between the disc and the operator.
- Run the tool at no load for a short time with the disc pointed away from people to check for vibration or wobble.
Because the deadman switch stops the drive when released, operators should never tape or wedge it in the on position. Hold the grinder with both hands throughout the cut and let the disc stop fully before setting the tool down.
Care and common problems
Dust from concrete and masonry is the main enemy of a corded grinder. Blow out the motor vents regularly with dry compressed air from a safe distance, and use the dust hood with an extractor whenever cutting mineral materials. If the tool loses power during a heavy cut, Smart Power may be protecting the motor; ease the feed pressure rather than forcing the disc. If the tool stops after a jam, ATC has reacted, so remove the disc from the cut, check it for damage and restart only with a sound disc. A disc that is chipped, cracked or glazed should be discarded, not reused.
The long-lasting carbon brush reduces service stops, but the brush and switch should still be inspected at the intervals recommended by Hilti. Any tool showing sparking at the vents, burning smell or damaged housing should be tagged out and sent for service.
Working with a heavy grinder in Oman’s climate
Summer site work in Oman means high ambient heat, and a 2400 W motor working in a hot steel structure needs regular cooling breaks; allow the grinder to run briefly at no load after a long cut to push cooler air through it. Desert sand and concrete dust settle in the vents and switch area, so store the tool in its case rather than on the open deck. On coastal fabrication yards, wipe salt deposits from the housing and keep diamond blades and abrasive discs dry, as moisture can weaken resin-bonded wheels. Hearing protection is necessary given the 97 dB(A) sound pressure level shown in the table.
