Elcometer 142 ISO 8502-3 Dust Tape Test Kit
Description
Dust tape test for blast-cleaned surfaces before painting
The Elcometer 142 ISO 8502-3 Dust Tape Test Kit assesses the quantity and size of dust particles on surfaces prepared for painting. Dust left on a blast-cleaned surface can reduce coating adhesion and lead to premature failure or a poor finish. A strip of adhesive tape is pressed onto the surface, lifted off and compared with a rating chart, either as a pass or fail test or as a permanent record of the dust present. The kit is used in accordance with the recommendations of BS EN ISO 8502-3 and can be used with the Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller, which presses the tape on uniformly.

Test procedure and rating
The operating instructions describe an eleven-step procedure. The first three turns of tape are discarded and a piece about 200 mm long is held by its ends and pressed sticky side down onto the surface, then rubbed three times in each direction at constant speed with firm pressure, each stroke taking about 6 seconds, leaving at least 150 mm of untouched tape stuck down. The tape is peeled off, transferred onto the transparent plastic strip, laid on the black or white side of the comparator board and compared with the sample dust ratings. The number of the closest match is recorded as the dust quantity rating, and any overall discoloration of the tape is rated 5, size class 1. The size of the predominant particles is then read through the 10x magnifier against the size table. At least three tests are made on the surface, and if the ratings differ by more than one, at least two more are made and averaged. Tape or adhesive residue must be removed before painting.
Dust size classes
| Class | Description of dust particles |
|---|---|
| 0 | Particles not visible under 10x magnification |
| 1 | Visible under 10x magnification but not with normal or corrected vision, usually less than 50 micrometres |
| 2 | Just visible with normal or corrected vision, usually 50 to 100 micrometres |
| 3 | Clearly visible with normal or corrected vision, up to 0.5 mm |
| 4 | Between 0.5 mm and 2.5 mm |
| 5 | Larger than 2.5 mm |
The strips can be stuck onto the test record sheet to give a permanent record. Spares listed include the record sheet (T14219451), display board (T14219454), adhesive tape (T9999358-1 for one roll, T9999358-2 for two rolls) and the dust assessment plate (T14219525). See all portable test and measurement instruments, including the Elcometer 224 digital surface profile gauge.
Documents and quotation
The attached Elcometer datasheet carries the kit contents and spares. Please confirm before ordering whether you also need the dust tape roller, the quantity of spare tape and record sheets and the specification (for example a marine coating standard) that sets the accepted dust rating, and send them with your enquiry so the part number can be checked against the manufacturer documentation.

About brand
Coating inspectors carry Elcometer gauges on painting and blasting jobs to record that a protective coating has been applied to specification. The company was founded in 1947 in Manchester, United Kingdom, and works in coating inspection and thickness gauges. Seven Star LLC lists the Elcometer 456 separate coating thickness gauge and supplies Elcometer instruments and probes to inspection teams in Oman on inquiry.
Elcometer 456 coating thickness gauges
The Elcometer 456 measures dry film thickness. The separate version in our listing takes plug-in probes on a cable, so one gauge body can work with different probes. Probe choice follows the substrate: ferrous probes for coatings on steel, non-ferrous probes for coatings on metals such as aluminum, and dual probes for both. Probe scale and shape are chosen to suit the coating thickness and the access to the surface.
Ordering Elcometer gauges and probes: what we need
Send the gauge model letter and part number from the label, the substrate, the expected coating thickness range, the probe type and scale, and any accessories such as reference foils. If a test certificate from the manufacturer is required, say so in the request. Fabrication yards across the GCC usually name the inspection standard as well.
