Hach Ultraturb Seawater sc Online Turbidity Sensor
Description
Hach Ultraturb Seawater sc online turbidity sensor for seawater, brackish water and raw water
The Hach Ultraturb Seawater sc is a flow-through (bypass) online turbidity sensor with an automatically self-cleaning sample chamber, designed for water that contains salt. It measures from 0.0001 to 1,000 FNU (NTU) and tolerates salt concentrations up to 65 g/L, so it can be used on seawater, brackish water and raw water as well as on filtered water, effluent and distribution systems. Seven Star LLC supplies the Ultraturb Seawater sc in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page explains its measuring principle, ordering variants and installation points for desalination and process water.
Measuring principle: 90 degree scatter with ratio detection
The sensor uses a 90 degree infrared pulse scattered-light technique according to EN ISO 7027-1:2016. In addition to the 90 degree detector, it uses detection at 180 degrees in a ratio method, which minimises reflections in the measuring cell and from the windows. The manufacturer notes that this means fouling of the sample chamber is detected sooner than with a single detector. The sensor meets the ISO 7027 requirements for online process turbidity. The range can be programmed as FNU, NTU, TE/F or EBC and the manufacturer states that 1 FNU is equivalent to 1 NTU.

The data sheet notes that a Hach sc controller is required and must be bought separately. The SC4500 controller accepts up to two sensors and the SC1000 up to eight; several controllers can be networked. Digital extension cables are listed from 0.35 m to 50 m. Spare parts include a set of four wiper blades (LZV275) and a wiper holder (LZV842), and calibration tools include a formazin turbidity standard (4000 NTU, 100 mL) and a calibration and cleaning kit (LZV451).
Why self-cleaning and ratio detection matter in saline water
Turbidity in a bypass sensor is measured in a small chamber, so biofilm, scale or air bubbles on the windows can drift the reading. The wipers clean the chamber automatically, which the manufacturer says gives stable measured values. The ratio detection helps spot chamber fouling early, so cleaning or service can be planned. Because the housing is ASA plastic with a quartz window and a titanium alloy wiper arm, the wetted parts are chosen to cope with the salt content. Entrained air from pressure drops in a sample line can be misread as turbidity, which is why the sample flow rate (0.2 to 1 L/min) and a bubble-free line are important.
Selection and ordering checklist for the Ultraturb Seawater sc
- Sample salinity: confirm that it does not exceed 65 g/L; for desalination brine check the actual TDS.
- Turbidity range: the sensor spans 0.0001 to 1,000 FNU, but accuracy figures are stated for 0 to 10 FNU.
- Cable length between the sensor and the controller, and extension cables if the distance is greater.
- Controller: SC4500 (two sensors) or SC1000 (up to eight sensors) with the right outputs and communication.
- Sample line material and fittings, and pressure below 6 bar at the sensor.
- Verification and calibration standards and spare wiper blades.
Installation and maintenance
Install the sensor on a bypass line with a stable flow in the stated range, use the inlet at the bottom so that air can leave at the outlet, and avoid dead legs. Pressure above 6 bar or a sample hotter than 50 °C is outside the data sheet. After commissioning, verify the sensor with the StablCal-type standard and check the zero with a filtered sample. Replace the wiper blades on a schedule that matches the fouling of the water, and keep the quartz window clean with the calibration and cleaning kit. Record the verification results so that trending of the sensor health is possible.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
The Ultraturb Seawater sc suits seawater intake and pretreatment monitoring before reverse osmosis membranes, filter effluent turbidity at desalination and power plant water treatment, brackish groundwater supplies, cooling water make-up and raw water at industrial sites. Turbidity before a membrane stage is an early indicator of filter breakthrough, and online data helps protect the membranes and meets operating limits set by the plant.

About brand
Hach is the American specialist in water quality analysis: spectrophotometers and reagents, laboratory meters, online analysers for chlorine, turbidity, nutrients and dissolved oxygen, and controllers. Clifford and Kathryn (Kitty) Hach founded the company in 1947 in Ames, Iowa, with USD 15,000 that Clifford had earned from a patent, and their first success was a simplified titration test for water hardness. Hach moved its headquarters to Loveland, Colorado, in 1978, was acquired by Danaher in 1999, and is now part of Veralto.
Seven Star LLC lists Hach online analyzers, controllers, sensors, portable meters and reagents, and sources them for water, wastewater, power and process plants in Oman.

Operators use the portable meters and reagents for spot checks, and the sc analyzers and probes for continuous signals to the control system.
Hach products we list
Ordering Hach products: what we need
Hach identifies every item by a catalog number, for example LXV416.99.20001 for a sensor or 21055-69 for a reagent pack, and the same reagent may be written with or without the dash. Send that number and the quantity. For analyzers and controllers, add the parameter and range, sample conditions, power supply, outputs and communication option. For sensors, tell us the controller model they will connect to and the cable length. For reagents, name the instrument and method so pack size and range can be confirmed against Hach documentation.
Facts checked against Hach's published company history, October 2026.
