ABB pH / redox (ORP) high-pressure hot-tap retractable sensor TBX series
Description
Overview
The ABB TBX Series sensor is a hot-tap retractable pH and ORP sensor engineered for continuous measurement in pressurized, aggressive industrial processes where the ability to remove or insert a sensor without shutting down the process is essential. Its hot-tap design uses a ball-valve assembly to allow safe sensor removal and replacement even in high-pressure and high-temperature service, avoiding the production loss of a full process shutdown for routine sensor maintenance.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB TBX Series sensor to industrial operators across Oman and the wider GCC with manufacturer documentation, backed locally with installation and application support.
Operating Principle
The TBX sensor measures pH or ORP using a standard electrochemical sensing element, but its defining engineering feature is the retractable hot-tap mechanism: the sensor assembly slides within a ball-valve housing mounted on the process line, so a technician can isolate the sensor from the process by closing the valve, then withdraw it fully for cleaning, calibration, or replacement without depressurizing or draining the line.
This design directly addresses the maintenance challenge inherent to pH/ORP sensors, which require periodic cleaning and recalibration as reference junctions and glass membranes age – on a fixed inline sensor, that maintenance would otherwise demand a process shutdown. The TBX’s hot-tap capability turns what would be a planned outage into a routine, in-service task.
Engineering Design of the ABB TBX Series
The TBX Series is built with durable materials and advanced sealing systems to withstand extreme process conditions, and is compatible with a variety of ABB transmitters, allowing it to slot into an existing ABB-based measurement architecture. Its compact, modular design supports both inline (fixed) and retractable installation configurations, giving engineers flexibility depending on the specific application’s maintenance requirements.
Tool-free disassembly simplifies routine maintenance in the field, and enhanced diagnostics support preventive care by flagging sensor degradation before it affects measurement accuracy. Combined with ABB’s digital sensor technology where applicable, the TBX Series delivers precise measurement and robust communication even under fluctuating temperature and aggressive media conditions.
Key Features
- Hot-tap retractable design for sensor service without process shutdown
- Ball-valve assembly for safe isolation, removal, and reinsertion
- Rated for high-pressure and high-temperature process conditions
- Durable construction with advanced sealing for aggressive media
- Compatible with a range of ABB pH/ORP transmitters
- Supports both inline and retractable installation configurations
- Tool-free disassembly for simplified maintenance
- Enhanced diagnostics for preventive care
Industrial Applications
The TBX Series is widely applied in pulp and paper processing, chemical manufacturing, wastewater treatment, and energy production – industries where pH/ORP measurement points are frequently pressurized, hot, or carry aggressive media, and where unplanned shutdowns for sensor maintenance carry significant production cost. Its retrofit compatibility also makes it a practical upgrade path for existing fixed-sensor installations.
Across Oman’s petrochemical, power, and industrial water treatment sectors, and throughout the wider GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the TBX Series to facilities in Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah that require dependable, factory-genuine retractable sensor technology with full local support.

Selecting and Specifying the Sensor
When ordering a hot-tap pH or ORP point, specify the measurement (pH or ORP), the process pressure and temperature, the chemistry of the medium, the line size, and the insertion length needed. Wetted materials and seals must suit the process, and the ball valve must match the line rating. For replacements, read the model code from the existing sensor and check the transmitter it connects to, so that the new ABB TBX Series sensor is compatible with the installed electronics and cable.
Installation and Calibration
Install the assembly where the process liquid is well mixed and the sensor tip stays wet, usually on the side of a horizontal pipe, and avoid mounting the glass electrode pointing upward where air may collect. Leave enough straight clearance for full withdrawal of the sensor. Before insertion, calibrate the pH sensor with fresh buffer solutions, or check the ORP sensor with a reference solution. Follow the site permit and the manufacturer procedure for inserting and retracting the sensor under pressure.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Slow response: coating on the glass membrane; retract the sensor, clean it with a suitable solution, and recalibrate.
- Drifting reading: often an aged or poisoned reference junction; replace the sensor element if cleaning does not help.
- Calibration fails: check buffer quality and temperature compensation before replacing the sensor.
- Leakage during retraction: stop and service the seals before further operation.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Hot-tap pH and ORP points are common in refinery sour water and caustic systems, cooling water treatment, desalination pretreatment and industrial wastewater plants in the region. Seven Star LLC supplies ABB analytical sensors, transmitters and spares to these users and helps confirm the sensor, valve and transmitter combination before quotation.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
