Hach DR900 Handheld Colorimeter, 9385100

Description

Hach DR900 handheld colorimeter for field water testing, part number 9385100

The Hach DR900 (order number 9385100) is a rugged, waterproof handheld colorimeter that runs the manufacturer’s most common colorimetric water methods on four LED wavelengths. It is designed for operators who test drinking water, wastewater and industrial water in the field rather than in a laboratory, and it stores the favourite methods for quick selection. Where the Hach DR1900 portable spectrophotometer offers a continuous wavelength range, the DR900 trades that flexibility for a lighter, simpler tool with automatic wavelength selection. Seven Star LLC supplies the DR900 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page explains the instrument and what to confirm before requesting a quotation.

How a colorimeter such as the DR900 measures

A colorimetric method turns the dissolved substance of interest into a coloured compound by adding a reagent, for example DPD for chlorine or a molybdate-based reagent for phosphate. The sample cell is placed in the instrument, a wavelength is selected and an LED shines light through it. The detector compares transmitted light with a blank, and the instrument converts absorbance into concentration with the stored calibration of the selected method. Because the DR900 uses four fixed LED wavelengths (420, 520, 560 and 610 nm), the methods are limited to those that can be run at these points, which is why the manufacturer describes the unit as covering its most common parameters rather than the whole method library of a spectrophotometer.

Field features of the DR900

  • Favourites list: frequently used methods are stored so that they can be started in less than four clicks.
  • Rugged construction: waterproof and dustproof, drop tested and shock resistant according to the manufacturer.
  • Data handling: 500 results are stored with date, time, sample ID and user ID, and can be exported through the USB port.
  • Interface: improved user interface for fast method selection, in more than twenty languages.
  • Compact format: 0.6 kg with batteries makes it suitable for carrying to remote sites.

Reagents, accessories and quality checks

The DR900 works with the manufacturer’s powder pillow and liquid reagents and with vial test kits through the 16 mm adapter. The data sheet lists accessories such as a soft-sided carrying case with shoulder strap, a hard-sided case, a portable laboratory carrying case, a DR/Check absorbance standard kit and SpecCheck gel secondary standards for DPD chlorine (low, medium and high range), fluoride, ozone and monochloramine with free ammonia. Standards allow the instrument to be verified between services. Reagents are consumables and must be ordered per method and parameter, so an RFQ should name the parameters, the method numbers and the expected number of tests.

Selection and ordering checklist for the DR900

  • Parameters and method numbers to be tested, and whether each is supported on the four wavelengths.
  • DR900 or a spectrophotometer (DR1900, DR3900, DR6000) if more methods or wavelength flexibility are needed.
  • Carrying case type for the field conditions.
  • Reagent quantities for the first period of use.
  • Verification standards and calibration check kit.
  • Spare sample cells and batteries.

Handling and maintenance

Keep the sample cell clean, wipe the outside dry and handle it by the top to avoid fingerprints in the light path. Always zero with a blank prepared from the same sample or deionised water as the method requires. Close the vial cover before exposing the instrument to splash or dust to retain the IP67 rating. Replace the AA cells when the low-battery warning appears, and keep reagents within their expiry date and within the temperature limits shown on the packaging. Dispose of reacted samples according to the plant and local rules because many reagents contain regulated chemicals.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Common field uses include free and total chlorine checks in drinking water networks and storage tanks, residual disinfectant monitoring in desalination post-treatment, boiler and cooling water tests on power and process plants, wastewater plant process control and checks at remote sites. The manufacturer also lists a hydraulic fracturing water analysis handbook for use with the DR900, and oilfield water treatment is a related use. Heat and dust are real concerns in the region, so the waterproof and dustproof case and the compact format are practical advantages.

About brand

Hach is the American specialist in water quality analysis: spectrophotometers and reagents, laboratory meters, online analysers for chlorine, turbidity, nutrients and dissolved oxygen, and controllers. Clifford and Kathryn (Kitty) Hach founded the company in 1947 in Ames, Iowa, with USD 15,000 that Clifford had earned from a patent, and their first success was a simplified titration test for water hardness. Hach moved its headquarters to Loveland, Colorado, in 1978, was acquired by Danaher in 1999, and is now part of Veralto.

Seven Star LLC lists Hach online analyzers, controllers, sensors, portable meters and reagents, and sources them for water, wastewater, power and process plants in Oman.

Ordering Hach products: what we need

Hach identifies every item by a catalog number, for example LXV416.99.20001 for a sensor or 21055-69 for a reagent pack, and the same reagent may be written with or without the dash. Send that number and the quantity. For analyzers and controllers, add the parameter and range, sample conditions, power supply, outputs and communication option. For sensors, tell us the controller model they will connect to and the cable length. For reagents, name the instrument and method so pack size and range can be confirmed against Hach documentation.

Facts checked against Hach's published company history, October 2026.
