Bray Series 6A Smart Electro-Pneumatic Valve Positioner
Description
Smart positioner with diagnostics for rotary and linear valves
The Bray Series 6A is a smart electro-pneumatic positioner for linear and part-turn actuators in industrial applications. It converts a 4-20 mA control signal, or a HART, PROFIBUS PA or FOUNDATION Fieldbus signal, into precise valve travel, and adds on-board diagnostics, simple mounting and automatic commissioning. It works on single- and double-acting actuators, on rotary and linear valves, and in control as well as on/off and emergency shutdown duty.
Bray quotes a very low steady-state air consumption of 0.0059 SCFM, a wide stroke range, and a modular design in which options such as a 4-20 mA feedback module, alarm card, limit switches, non-contact sensor or integral volume booster can be added in the field. The pneumatic media Bray lists are natural gas, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and noble gases, in addition to clean instrument air.

Accessories and mounting options
The positioner can be fitted with a 4-20 mA position feedback module that outputs valve position to the control station, a programmable alarm module with two semiconductor switch outputs, one fault output and one digital input, and mechanical or intrinsically safe inductive limit switches driven by a cam. For heavy vibration, a non-contact solid-state sensor can be built in or mounted externally on the valve, which also helps where the valve is hot, hard to reach or in a harmful atmosphere.
The integral volume booster, which reproduces the pneumatic signal 1:1 at Cv 2.0, gives fast stroking of large actuators with a lower profile and less tubing than a separate booster. Bray lists the 6A, the Series 5A to 5C status monitors and the Series 54 proximity sensors as accessories for its Series 98 actuator.
Selection and what to confirm before ordering
Specify the 6A where continuous diagnostics, fieldbus communication or SIL 2 shutdown service is needed. For simple quarter-turn modulation from a 3-15 psi signal the pneumatic Series 6P is the alternative. Please confirm the communication protocol, enclosure material, hazardous-area certificate needed, fail-safe mode, actuator single or double action and the mounting kit for the actuator in use.
| Model | Input signal | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Series 6A (this page) | 4-20 mA, HART, PROFIBUS PA, FF | Smart control and SIL 2 ESD, rotary or linear |
| Series 6P | 3-15 psi pneumatic | Quarter-turn modulating, dampers |
| Series 54 / 5A-5C | None (position sensing) | Open and closed position indication |

About brand
Bray valves are a familiar sight on water, HVAC and general process lines, mostly as rubber-lined butterfly valves with an actuator bolted on top. Bray International, founded in 1986 in Houston, USA, makes butterfly valves, ball valves and the pneumatic and electric actuators that drive them. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Bray valves and actuators for plants and building services in Oman, including the Series 30/31 and Series 70 listed here.
Bray valves and actuators listed here
Series 30 and Series 31 are the resilient-seated butterfly valves: Series 30 is the wafer body and Series 31 the lug body. They are used for on/off and throttling duty on water, air and other fluids compatible with the seat. The Series 70 is Bray's electric actuator for quarter-turn valves, ordered by torque size and supply voltage, with on/off or modulating control.
Ordering Bray butterfly valves: what we need
For a valve, send the series, size, wafer or lug body, body, disc and seat materials, flange standard and operator type (lever, gear or actuator). For a Series 70 actuator, send the torque size from the nameplate, voltage, and whether it is on/off or modulating. A nameplate photo covers most of this. GCC water projects often specify the seat and disc materials, so quote them exactly.
