Bray Series 5A Valve Status Monitor Switch Box, IP66/67
Description
Compact limit switch box for any VDI/VDE 3845 quarter-turn actuator
The Bray Series 5A is the compact member of Bray’s valve status monitor (VSM) range. It gives visual and electrical open and closed indication on any VDI/VDE 3845-compliant quarter-turn device, and Bray designs it as the lightweight housing for the tightest installation spots. The enclosure is weatherproof to IP66/67 and NEMA Type 4 and 4X, offered either in die-cast aluminum coated with two layers of polyester or in a fiberglass-reinforced PBT resin body.
A switch box is the small part that tells the control room whether a pneumatic or electric quarter-turn valve is really open or closed, so reliability and simple wiring matter more than features. The 5A holds up to two switches and a four or eight pole terminal strip with angled, clearly marked terminals, a captive-bolt cover with an O-ring seal outside the wet area, and a tool-free cam system for setting switch points.

Hazardous areas, mounting and ordering code
For intrinsic safety Bray offers the 5A with NAMUR switches, certified NEC 500 Class I Division 1 Groups A to D T6 and Class II Division 1 Groups E, F and G T85 deg C, NEC 505 Class I Zone 0 and Zone 1 AEx ia IIC T6, ATEX II 1G Ex ia IIC Ga T6, II 2G Ex ia IIC Gb T6 and IECEx. Ambient limits for the NAMUR switch are -25 to +49 deg C in Zone 0 and -25 to +65 deg C in Zone 1 or 2.
A universal NAMUR bracket in stainless steel or resin mounts the box on rack-and-pinion, scotch yoke and other quarter-turn actuators with NAMUR 30 x 80 and 30 x 130 pads, including all Bray Series 92, 93 and 98 actuators. The monitor can sit perpendicular or parallel to the conduit run without changing brackets, and the dome can be rotated 90 degrees to invert the indication. The part code follows the pattern 5A000X-126X X XXX / E X: thread type (0 imperial or 5 metric), switch option letter (for example A for SPDT mechanical, C for PNP NO), switch configuration, language and indicator colour.
| Switch option (brochure table) | Maximum quantity 5A / 5B / 5C |
|---|---|
| Mechanical SPDT or gold-plated SPDT | 2 / 6 / 6 |
| PNP or NPN 3-wire proximity | 2 / 6 / 6 |
| 140 V 2-wire proximity | 2 / 6 / 6 |
| 250 V 2-wire, reed SPDT, NAMUR IS | 2 / 6 / not offered |
| DPDT-DB mechanical, CommPro network modules | not offered / 2 / 2 (network modules 4) |
Choosing 5A, 5B or 5C
Take the 5A when two switches are enough and weight and space count. Choose the 5B when up to six switches, 20 terminal points or a network module are needed, and the 5C when the area is hazardous and a flameproof enclosure is required.
| Model | Switches and terminals | Protection |
|---|---|---|
| Series 5A (this page) | Up to 2 switches, 4 or 8 poles | IP66/67, NEMA 4/4X, Ex ia option |
| Series 5B | Up to 6 switches, up to 20 terminals | IP66/67, Ex ia option, AS-i, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS DP |
| Series 5C | Up to 6 switches, 12 or 20 poles | Ex db IIB+H2, Ex tb IIIC, IP66/67/68 |
Documents and quotation
The Bray brochure B-1068 covering the 5A, 5B and 5C is attached as the datasheet; the page also lists a technical manual, installation manual, safety manual and hazardous-location selection guides. Please confirm the actuator mounting pattern, number and type of switches, supply voltage, area classification and conduit thread before ordering.
See the wider range of valve positioners and accessories on our catalogue, or send the model name and order number for a quotation.

About brand
Bray valves are a familiar sight on water, HVAC and general process lines, mostly as rubber-lined butterfly valves with an actuator bolted on top. Bray International, founded in 1986 in Houston, USA, makes butterfly valves, ball valves and the pneumatic and electric actuators that drive them. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Bray valves and actuators for plants and building services in Oman, including the Series 30/31 and Series 70 listed here.
Bray valves and actuators listed here
Series 30 and Series 31 are the resilient-seated butterfly valves: Series 30 is the wafer body and Series 31 the lug body. They are used for on/off and throttling duty on water, air and other fluids compatible with the seat. The Series 70 is Bray's electric actuator for quarter-turn valves, ordered by torque size and supply voltage, with on/off or modulating control.
Ordering Bray butterfly valves: what we need
For a valve, send the series, size, wafer or lug body, body, disc and seat materials, flange standard and operator type (lever, gear or actuator). For a Series 70 actuator, send the torque size from the nameplate, voltage, and whether it is on/off or modulating. A nameplate photo covers most of this. GCC water projects often specify the seat and disc materials, so quote them exactly.
