Böhler Marathon 104 Fluoride-Basic Flux for Stainless SAW

Description

Fluoride-basic flux for stainless, heat-resistant and nickel-base SAW

Böhler Marathon 104 is an agglomerated fluoride-basic flux for submerged arc welding of stainless and heat-resistant steel grades and nickel-base alloys. Böhler Welding recommends it for the highest demands on crack resistance and weld metal mechanical properties, especially in heavy wall thickness. Combined with stainless wire grades it gives a high degree of purity in the weld metal, good mechanical properties and good corrosion resistance. It is not chromium-compensating, and its behaviour regarding carbon, silicon and manganese is neutral. Slag detachability and bead appearance are described as good to excellent.

Typical applications and wire combinations

The data sheet highlights three application groups: creep-resistant weld metals with Thermanit ATS, non-magnetic applications, and cryogenic work, particularly LNG with Thermanit NiMo C 276. The Böhler combination list pairs Marathon 104 with austenitic wires such as Thermanit 17/15 TT, 18/17 E Mn, 20/16 SM, 20/25 Cu and 19/10 H, and with Thermanit 309 H. Weld metal toughness, hot-crack resistance and chemistry depend on the wire and the welding parameters, so the qualified combination in your WPS decides the choice. When chromium loss in the arc has to be compensated, the aluminate-fluoride-basic is the Böhler alternative.

Handling and procedure notes

Stainless and nickel-base submerged arc welding is sensitive to contamination and heat input. Use clean, dedicated flux hoppers and hoses so that carbon-steel dust or mill scale does not reach the weld, observe the interpass temperature of the procedure, and redry the flux over the stated 2 to 10 hour range before use. For heavy sections, hot-crack resistance depends on ferrite balance and joint restraint as well as on the flux, so the wire and flux combination should be qualified for the actual joint.

About brand

Böhler Welding is the welding consumables brand of voestalpine Böhler Welding, part of the voestalpine group, with a portfolio that covers stick electrodes, TIG rods, solid wires, gas-shielded and self-shielded flux-cored wires and submerged-arc wires and fluxes. The company states more than 100 years of experience. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Böhler Welding consumables and welding machines, including pipeline electrodes, and sources Böhler Welding consumables for fabricators and pipeline contractors.

Böhler Welding product groups

Beyond the consumables above, Böhler Welding lists strip cladding, wire arc additive manufacturing, metal powders, arc spraying cored wires, ceramic weld backing, brazing consumables and welding automation such as orbital welding and collaborative robots. The pipeline range includes cellulosic FOX CEL electrodes and basic vertical-down FOX BVD electrodes for large-diameter line pipe.

Ordering Böhler Welding consumables: what we need

Give the product name, the AWS or EN classification, the diameter and length, and the packaging you need. For pipeline electrodes also state the pipe grade, wall thickness, welding position and whether sour-service test values are required, because the Böhler Welding data sheets note that some test values are available on request.
