ER308L TIG rod for 304 and 304L austenitic stainless steel

Böhler Thermanit JE-308L is a TIG rod of type ER308L / W 19 9 L for joining and surfacing with matching and similar stabilised and unstabilised austenitic CrNi(N) and CrNiMo(N) steels and cast steel grades. Böhler Welding states corrosion resistance similar to matching low-carbon and stabilised 18/8 CrNi(N) steels, excellent weld metal toughness down to -320 °F (about -196 °C) and a maximum application temperature of 650 °F (about 345 °C). It is the standard rod for 304 and 304L process piping, tanks, food and chemical equipment.

Selection and practical notes

For molybdenum-bearing 316 and 316L base metal use

Thermanit GE-316L.

, and for joints between stainless and carbon steel use

Thermanit 309L.

. A 308L deposit is chosen for service where there is no molybdenum requirement. Stainless TIG welding needs argon back purging on the root side of pipe to avoid oxidation, and a clean, dedicated rod and brush set so that carbon steel is not carried into the weld.

Handling and what to confirm

Store stainless rods separately from carbon steel consumables, wear clean gloves, and use stainless brushes and abrasives only. Confirm the diameter, pack size and certificate level when ordering. If the equipment is for cryogenic or LNG service, ask for the toughness test conditions on the certificate, since the data sheet figure refers to typical all-weld metal values in the as-welded condition.
