Murphy 10705147 Single-Port and 10705146 Dual-Port Exhaust Pyrometer for Diesel Engines

Description

Exhaust gas temperature gauges for single and V-type diesel engines

The Murphy 10705147 single-port pyrometer and the 10705146 dual-port pyrometer monitor exhaust temperatures in all types of engines. The dual-port version can monitor each bank of a V-type engine so the two readings can be compared at all times. Both have an easy-to-read illuminated dial with Fahrenheit and Celsius scales and need no outside power apart from the dial lighting.

Enovation Controls explains that excessive exhaust temperature is a major damaging factor for engines, caused by an upset fuel and air ratio such as over throttling, a dirty air cleaner, different fuels, a malfunctioning fuel system, a change of altitude or an out-of-tune engine. A pyrometer shows the condition before serious damage occurs. The gauges suit stationary or mobile engines, power units, agricultural and construction equipment, and marine and trucking applications.

Thermocouples, adaptors and installation

The pyrometer is sold as the gauge head, with the type K thermocouples as accessories. A thermocouple can be mounted in the engine manifold or in an exhaust port of 2 to 3-1/2 in (51 to 89 mm) diameter. On turbocharged engines it mounts between the engine and the turbo. Adaptors are listed for 1/8 NPT (00003577), 1/4 NPT (00003450), 3/8 NPT (00003578) and 1/2 NPT (00003579).

The wire lead assembly is a 14 ft extension with mating connections for both thermocouples. The bulletin says the extension can reach 100 ft (30.48 m) using 18 AWG (1.0 mm2) or larger copper wire at the gauge head, with a heat shrinkable sleeve supplied to insulate the terminals after installation.

Choosing single or dual and checking the setup

Use the single-port 10705147 where one exhaust temperature is enough, for example on an in-line engine or at the turbo inlet. Use the dual-port 10705146 on a V-type engine to watch both banks. Note the different top of scale: 1300 F for the single and 1200 F for the dual.

Order the thermocouple type and thread to suit the exhaust manifold, add the lead assembly if the gauge is mounted away from the engine, and state 12 or 24 VDC for the dial light. The bulletin lists benefits such as longer engine life, better fuel economy and less lube oil dilution, but those are manufacturer statements for general use. Enovation Controls lists this product family on its Legacy Products page, which describes those items as less popular or outdated but still available for purchase. Confirm current availability and any replacement part before ordering.

About brand

Murphy is an American brand of engine and equipment protection controls that began in 1939 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Founder Frank W. (Pat) Murphy combined an indicating gauge with a switch that stops an engine on low oil pressure or high coolant temperature, first installed on unattended oilfield engines. That SWICHGAGE remains the brand's best-known product.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list selected Murphy gauges, switches and controllers for engines, generator sets, pumps and compressors in Oman and the GCC.

Milestones

  • 1939: Pat Murphy develops the Murphy safety switch and starts FW Murphy in Tulsa.
  • Today: SWICHGAGE gauges are still among Murphy's best-selling products.

Murphy product series

The classic range includes the 20P and 25P pressure Swichgage and the 20T and 25T temperature Swichgage, gauges with built-in switch contacts for alarm and shutdown, B-Series Murphygage gauges, the L150 and EL150K1 level Swichgage, ESPS-100 and ESTS senders and switches, Tattletale annunciators and magnetic switches, the VS2 shock and vibration switch, the MP3298 magnetic pickup and exhaust pyrometers for diesel engines.

Newer products include the PowerCore MPC-20 configurable engine controller and the PowerView 780B 7-inch display with CAN J1939 communication, and the Sentinel 300P battery charger keeps starting batteries charged.

Where Murphy products are used

Gas compressor packages, engine-driven pumps and fire pumps, generator sets, irrigation and dewatering pumps and mobile equipment, where the instruments protect the engine against low oil pressure, high temperature, overspeed and vibration.
