Advantech ADAM-4055 16-Channel Isolated Digital I/O Module with Modbus

Description

Isolated digital inputs and outputs for remote RS-485 stations

The Advantech ADAM-4055 is a 16-channel isolated digital I/O module for the ADAM-4000 RS-485 series. It offers eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs, with 2500 VDC isolation, and responds to ASCII commands or Modbus/RTU. Its job is to bring contact status from a remote panel into a PLC, SCADA system or data logger and to switch indicators, relays and small loads from the host.

The inputs are configurable: a switch or jumper selects dry or wet contact, so the same module can read volt-free contacts or a 10 to 50 V signal. The outputs are open collector, and the datasheet states that both sink (NPN) and source (PNP) output types are supported, which widens the choice of connected loads.

It shares its datasheet with the ADAM-4053 digital input module and the ADAM-4080 counter module.

Ordering and selection notes

The ordering code in the datasheet is ADAM-4055-C: 16-ch Isolated Digital I/O Module with Modbus. Companion modules on the same sheet are ADAM-4053-F (16 digital inputs) and ADAM-4080-E (2-channel counter and frequency module).

Choose the ADAM-4055 when one station must both read and drive discrete signals and when isolation from field noise matters. If you only need contact monitoring, the 16-input ADAM-4053 uses more input channels. If the application also needs pulse counting, the ADAM-4080 counter module on the same sheet accepts input frequencies up to 50 kHz. Ethernet-based alternatives from the same maker already listed here include the ADAM-6050 12DI/6DO module.

What to confirm before ordering

Confirm whether each input will be dry or wet contact and set the switch or jumper accordingly, check the load current against the 200 mA per channel and 800 mA total limits, and choose a supply within 10 to 30 VDC. Note the operating range of -10 to 70 degrees C, which is narrower than the -40 to 85 degrees C of the ADAM-4150.

About brand

ADAM modules are how many instrument and SCADA engineers first come across Advantech. The Taiwanese company, founded in 1983 and based in Taipei, makes industrial computers, remote I/O and communication hardware. Seven Star LLC supplies Advantech automation products to system integrators and plant teams in Oman, and this page lists items such as an ADAM-6000 Ethernet I/O module, an ADAM-4000 serial converter and an IPC rackmount chassis.

Advantech ADAM and IPC products listed here

The ADAM-6017 is an 8-channel analog input module from the ADAM-6000 Ethernet I/O family. It brings voltage and current signals onto a network and is read by SCADA or PLC software over Modbus TCP. The ADAM-4520 belongs to the ADAM-4000 serial family and converts RS-232 to isolated RS-422 or RS-485, a common fix for linking a PC or panel to field devices. The IPC-623 is a 4U, 20-slot rackmount chassis that houses a backplane, CPU card and expansion cards for control room computers.

Ordering Advantech hardware: what we need

Send the full part number with its suffix. Advantech adds letters after the model, as in ADAM-6017-D, to mark the hardware revision, and existing configurations sometimes depend on it. For an IPC chassis, state the backplane, power supply and drive bay arrangement, since these are ordered as specific versions. We supply across the GCC and check part numbers against Advantech documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
