Janitza UMG 508 Universal Measuring Device
Description
Overview
The Janitza UMG 508 is a universal measuring device from Janitza (Laubach, Germany) built for continuous power quality analysis and energy data acquisition in industrial and building electrical installations. The instrument performs continuous gap-free measurement and calculates all true RMS values over a 200 ms interval, with a 20 kHz scanning rate on the voltage and current inputs, so fast events and transients are captured instead of averaged away. It supports harmonics analysis from the 1st to the 40th order with phase-angle reference, reactive and apparent power direction, and detection of transients longer than 50 microseconds with storage of up to 16,000 scanning points; the device evaluates more than 800 measurement values at once.
The UMG 508 is complemented in the Janitza range by devices for energy management and power quality, all supported by the GridVis software for data evaluation. Janitza instruments are widely installed in European industrial plants and building energy management applications.
Engineering and Design
The UMG 508 measures true RMS (TRMS) values of the voltages and currents applied to its four voltage and four current measurement inputs, supporting a fundamental frequency range of 40 Hz to 70 Hz and measurement in both TN and TT networks. A 16-bit A/D converter feeds the continuous 20 kHz scanning of the inputs; a 256 MByte Flash data memory and 32 MByte SDRAM retain the measurement data and event log. Digital I/O is provided by eight digital inputs and five digital outputs, and up to 256-colour graphical feedback comes from the 320×240 colour graphic display with six keys.
Communication is the strong side of the UMG 508. The RS485 interface supports Profibus DP/V0, Modbus RTU, Modbus master and BACnet (option), while the Ethernet interface provides a built-in web server, e-mail (SMTP), Modbus/TCP, Modbus RTU over Ethernet, FTP, DHCP/BootP, ICMP, NTP, TFTP and SNMP. A PTP option is also documented. Because the measurement core runs continuously, the UMG 508 can push alarms, data and trend logs to SCADA or building management systems without a gateway. The device can also run customer-created applications programmed in Jasic, Janitza’s scripting language, for special monitoring and evaluation logic.
The UMG 508 is complemented in the Janitza range by devices for energy management and power quality, all supported by the GridVis software for data evaluation. For plant energy managers the device provides the consumption data required for ISO 50001 style energy monitoring, and the event memory captures network disturbances for later analysis. For facility operators the UMG 508 reduces the number of instruments needed in the panel, because one universal measuring device replaces individual meters for current, voltage, power and energy on the same feeder. Janitza instruments are widely installed in European industrial plants and building energy management applications. The UMG 508 records consumption and demand data that support ISO 50001 energy management systems, and its event memory documents network disturbances for troubleshooting. With the GridVis software, the recorded data is visualized in trends and reports, giving facility managers the basis for load planning, energy cost allocation and optimization measures.

Installation and Wiring Practice
The accuracy of a power analyzer depends as much on the current transformers and wiring as on the instrument itself.
- Choose current transformers with a primary rating that suits the real load and an accuracy class that suits the purpose, billing-grade for energy allocation.
- Wire the CT secondaries through shorting terminal blocks so the device can be removed without opening a live CT circuit.
- Protect the voltage measurement inputs with suitable fuses or a miniature circuit breaker, placed close to the tap-off point.
- Keep phase order and CT orientation consistent: each current input must be paired with the voltage of the same phase.
- Use screened, twisted-pair cable for RS485 with correct termination at both ends of the bus.
Commissioning Checks
Once energised, set the CT and VT ratios, the network type and the nominal frequency, then compare the readings with a clamp meter or a reference instrument. Check the phase-angle diagram: each phase should show positive active power for a consuming load. Assign a fixed IP address or DHCP reservation, synchronise the clock through NTP so event logs line up with other systems, and confirm that the SCADA, BMS or GridVis connection reads the expected values.
Troubleshooting
- Negative power on one phase: reversed CT or crossed CT and voltage phases.
- Power factor looks wrong: CTs connected to the wrong phase inputs.
- Energy reading far too high or low: incorrect CT or VT ratio entered in the device.
- Intermittent Modbus timeouts: missing bus termination, duplicate addresses or a mismatched baud rate.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
In Oman, power quality analyzers of this class are used on main incomers and critical feeders in industrial plants, hospitals, data centres, malls and airport facilities. Heavy use of variable speed drives and large air-conditioning loads makes harmonic monitoring useful, and long-term data helps plants plan capacitor banks and filters. Panels with the device fitted should be kept within its operating temperature range, which calls for panel cooling in outdoor or poorly ventilated substations.

About brand
Energy managers and electrical engineers know Janitza for the UMG series of measuring devices found in main distribution boards and substations. The German company, founded in 1986 and based in Lahnau, concentrates on energy measurement and power quality monitoring. Seven Star LLC lists the Janitza UMG 508 and supplies Janitza power quality analyzers and their accessories to plants and building operators in Oman and the GCC.
Janitza UMG 508 and the UMG series
The UMG 508 is a panel-mounted power analyzer with a color graphic display. It measures the electrical quantities of a three-phase system continuously, records harmonics up to the 40th order and supply events in its own memory, and passes data to energy management or SCADA software over Ethernet and RS485. Modbus and Profibus DP are among its protocols, and Janitza GridVis software is used to set it up and read it out.
Ordering Janitza devices: what we need
Give the Janitza item number or the full type from the rating label, since one UMG model can be made in more than one supply voltage version. Add the auxiliary voltage in the panel, the measured system voltage, current transformer secondary (1 A or 5 A), the protocol your software uses, and any current transformers or residual current sensors to be quoted with it.
