Sizing the ACS580-01-363A-4 for the motor

Two duty classes apply: light overload at 345 A and 200 kW, heavy duty at 293 A and 160 kW. Maximum output current is 498 A. Light-overload use allows 110% for one minute in ten at 40 degrees C; heavy duty allows 150%. For North American supplies the table shows 300 Hp at 361 A (light) and 250 Hp at 302 A (heavy). Use the light-overload column for pumps and fans and the heavy-duty column for constant-torque loads.

Recommended input protection is 500 A gG (IEC) or 500 A UL class T. Heat loss is 4836 W; air flow 1150 m3/h; noise at full fan speed 68 dBA. Ambient limits: up to +40 degrees C for frames R4 to R9 in IP21, up to +50 degrees C with derating.

The IP21 body of frame R9 is 955 mm high with glandbox (680 mm without), 380 mm wide and 418 mm deep, and weighs 97 kg. With the +B056 option the drive becomes IP55 / UL Type 12 at 955 x 380 x 477 mm and 103 kg, with no extra enclosure needed.

Filters, fieldbus and options

The designation splits into ACS580, 1 (wall-mounted drive), the 363 A size and 4 for 380 to 480 V. Plus codes add features, for example +K457 for FCAN-01 CANopen, +K458 for FSCA-01 Modbus RTU, +K462 for FCNA-01 ControlNet. EMC: C2 for wall-mounted drives and cabinets up to frame R9, C3 for modules and the R10 to R11 cabinets. The brake chopper is built in only up to frame R3, so this frame needs an external brake unit if braking is required.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
