Light-duty and heavy-duty ratings

For heavy-duty operation the drive provides 206 A (110 kW) at 150% overload for one minute in ten; light duty is 234 A (132 kW) at 110%. The maximum output current is 350 A for two seconds at start.

Frames R7 to R9 are heavy, and ABB advises lifting them with the lifting eyes and a hoist. This R7 unit weighs 69 kg and is 300 x 965 x 393 mm; cooling air is 550 m3/h, power loss 3300 W and noise 65 dB(A). Protect the input with 355 A OFAF1H355 gG, or 450 A 170M5809 aR; UL uses JJS-350. Cable: 2×(3×70+35) mm2 copper.

Vertical mounting needs 155 mm above, 300 mm below and 150 mm at the sides for frame R7. Terminal data in the manual allows a maximum power wire of 240 mm2 per phase on R7.

Reading the ACS580-01-246A-4 order code

Order code ACS580-01-246A-4: series ACS580, construction 01, current 246A, voltage 4. Options are appended with plus signs, for example +B056 for IP55 (factory only), +K454 for PROFIBUS DP and +C135 for flange mounting; ABB’s key also lists printed manual languages R700 to R714.

Please include the planned installation altitude, the ambient temperature range and the type of enclosure or cabinet in your request, so that derating and cooling can be checked against the manufacturer’s data before a quotation is issued.

Checking a replacement or spare? Compare the printed type code on the drive with the code on this page, character by character, and add the plus codes of the options fitted. The ACS580 uses the same control panel across sizes, but power parts, fuses and cabling differ by frame, so always match the full code.

Selecting the right ACS580 rating for the load

Sizing a drive of this power starts with the driven machine, not the motor nameplate alone. Centrifugal pumps and fans usually fall under light-duty use, where the 132 kW rating applies, while conveyors, mixers or positive-displacement loads that need high starting torque should be checked against the heavy-duty rating of 110 kW. Compare the motor full-load current with the drive current for the selected duty, and allow for the ambient temperature and altitude derating described in the hardware manual. Because a brake chopper is not built in, applications with frequent fast stops or overhauling loads need a separate braking solution or a longer ramp-down time agreed with the process engineer.

Installation and commissioning practice

Plan the location before the drive arrives. The unit is heavy, so lifting equipment and a clear route to the wall or cabinet are needed, and the mounting surface must carry the weight safely. Respect the free space above, below and at the sides so that cooling air can flow, and do not place heat-sensitive equipment directly above the outlet. Use the fuse types and cable sizes listed on this page, follow the manual for cable glands, shield termination and motor cable routing, and keep motor and control cables separated.

During commissioning, the assistant control panel guides the user through motor data and start and stop settings. Run the motor uncoupled where the process allows, check the direction of rotation, and test Safe torque off with the plant safety circuit before the drive is handed over. Record all parameter changes and keep a backup copy of the settings for future replacement.

Operation and maintenance

Drives of this size are reliable when they stay cool and clean. Inspect the installation at regular intervals for dust build-up, loose terminals and signs of overheating, and keep the cooling air path free. Review the fault information on the control panel after any unplanned stop, and follow the maintenance schedule in the manual for parts that age with operating hours. A planned approach reduces surprise trips during peak summer demand.

ACS580 drives in GCC conditions

Pump stations, cooling plants and process lines in Oman and the GCC often run in hot, dusty electrical rooms. The coated boards fitted as standard help against humidity and contamination, but room temperature is still the main limit: if the ambient approaches the upper operating limit, provide air conditioning or forced ventilation sized for the stated power loss and air flow. Where the drive is located outside a clean electrical room, consider the IP55 option instead of the standard IP21 unit. In the RFQ, state the motor rating, duty type, supply voltage, enclosure or cabinet, required options with their plus codes, installation altitude and ambient range, so that the offer covers the complete configuration.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
