I/O and power data of the TM221CE24T

Supply voltage: 24 V DC. Supply voltage limits: 20.4 to 28.8 V. Discrete inputs: 14, discrete input 4 fast input IEC 61131-2 Type 1. Discrete outputs: 10 transistor 2 fast output. Discrete I/O: 24. Analogue inputs: 2 0 to 10 V. Input resolution: 10 bits. Input voltage: 24 V. Output type: Transistor. Output voltage: 24 V DC. Output current: 0.5 A. Ethernet: 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX 1 100 m copper cable. Communication protocols: USB port USB – SoMachine-Network; Non isolated serial link Modbus master/slave – RTU/ASCII or SoMachine-Network; Ethernet. Output current: 0.52 A 5 V expansion bus; 0.2 A 24 V expansion bus. Mechanical durability: 20000000 cycles transistor output.

Of the 14 inputs, four are fast inputs with a 5 microsecond turn-on on I0, I1, I6 and I7, which can count pulses from encoders and flow meters. Of the 10 transistor outputs, two are fast outputs reaching 100 kHz in PWM or pulse mode, suited to a stepper or a small servo command. Two analogue inputs of 0 to 10 V with 10-bit resolution are built in.

Supply is 24 V DC within 20.4 to 28.8 V, with an inrush of 35 A. Power consumption without expansion is 4.8 W and up to 14 W with the maximum expansion. The controller can take up to 7 local expansion modules, or 14 in a remote I/O architecture.

Where the TM221CE24T sits in the M221 family

Within the M221 compact family the transistor models are for DC loads and fast outputs, while the relay models such as the TM221CE40R switch AC and DC loads up to 2 A per output. This unit has no relay isolation, so inductive loads need suppression and AC loads need interposing relays.

The TM221C16T is the same architecture with 16 I/O and no Ethernet, while the TM221CE24T gives more I/O and an Ethernet port for programming, Modbus TCP and HMI connection. The TM3 expansion modules attach on the right, so the choice of the base controller defines how far the project can grow.

Selection checklist for the TM221CE24T

  • I/O count: 14 inputs and 10 outputs, with 4 fast inputs and 2 fast outputs.
  • Output type: PNP transistor, 24 V DC, 0.5 A per output.
  • Sensors: sink or source input wiring is configurable.
  • Expansion: how many TM3 modules are required (up to 7 local).
  • Network: Ethernet for programming and Modbus TCP.
  • Supply: 24 V DC from a stabilised power supply, with proper fusing.

Wiring and programming of the TM221CE24T

Provide a stable 24 V DC supply and separate the supply of inductive loads where possible. Add diodes or suppressors across coils to protect transistor outputs, since fast outputs are especially sensitive.

Connect to the controller over Ethernet or USB, create the application and use the simulator before downloading. After commissioning, save the project file and the controller memory image so the machine can be restored after a fault.

Typical applications of the TM221CE24T in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC the M221 is a popular controller for small skid-mounted systems, packaging machines, dosing units and building services. Panels in hot rooms should be checked against the controller temperature limits and kept dust-free.

About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones

  • 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
  • 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
  • 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
  • 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
  • 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
  • 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.

Where Schneider Electric products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.

APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power

Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running. Schneider Electric breakers, drives and PLCs can be quoted together with APC UPS systems in one request.
