How the BMXP342020 processes the program
The processor executes the program in a cyclic master task plus fast and event tasks. The datasheet lists a Boolean instruction time of 0.12 µs Boolean; 0.17 µs double-length words and a master-task overhead as stated in the datasheet. Program, constants and symbols can be backed up to the supplied memory card.
Capacity is stated as 1024 I/O for discrete I/O and 256 I/O for analogue I/O on up to 4 racks, with up to 36 application-specific channels.
Where the BMXP342020 fits in an X80 rack
The processor sits in the first slot positions of an X80 rack next to a power supply module such as BMXCPS2000 and I/O modules such as BMXDDI1602 (16-channel discrete input). The rack backplane carries power and bus signals to all modules.
Embedded communications include the serial link and Ethernet TCP/IP; the datasheet states Modbus TCP messaging and bandwidth management among the services. For more network capacity add Ethernet or AS-Interface communication modules, up to the numbers in the datasheet.
Selection and ordering checklist for the BMXP342020
- I/O count: compare required discrete and analogue points with 1024 I/O and 256 I/O.
- Rack count and backplane type must match the platform you are extending.
- Memory: the application size and object areas must fit the processor; the datasheet lists the object area sizes.
- Network: check Ethernet services and connections needed.
- Programming software version and memory card: confirm compatibility with the project.
- Spares: decide whether to hold a spare processor for fast replacement.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the BMXP342020
Fit the module into the dedicated processor slot of the rack, secure it, and connect the Ethernet and serial cables. The BMXP342020 weighs 0.205 kg and draws 95 mA 24 V DC from the rack supply, so check the rack power budget. Use the programming software to assign an IP address and download the program; keep the project and a memory-card backup stored separately.
During service, watch the front LEDs for run, error and I/O status and use the diagnostic counters of the Modbus services. Replace the module with the same reference where possible; a processor swap should be followed by a restore from the memory card and a functional test.
Typical applications of the BMXP342020 in Oman and the GCC
M340 processors like the BMXP342020 run utilities, water and wastewater plants, desalination auxiliaries, oil and gas package units and building systems in Oman and the GCC. Place the rack in a cooled, clean panel; the datasheet gives an operating range of 0 to 60 °C.
Backup, spares and replacement planning for the BMXP342020
A processor is the heart of the rack, so plan its replacement before it fails. Keep the latest project file, the memory-card backup and a note of the firmware level used on site. A replacement of the same reference can normally be loaded from the memory card, but always check the firmware compatibility with the programming software and with communication modules in the same rack. In remote or offshore locations a spare processor on the shelf shortens an outage from days to hours.
When refurbishing an older rack, record the module order, the I/O addresses and any special configuration so that the replacement behaves exactly as the original did.

About brand
Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones
- 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
- 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
- 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
- 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
- 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
- 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.
Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control
Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.
Where Schneider Electric products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.
APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power
Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running.
