Beckhoff CX Embedded PCs listed
The CX5140 and CX9020 listed here belong to the CX family of DIN rail controllers. The CX5140 is part of the CX5100 series, which Beckhoff builds with Intel Atom multi-core processors. The CX9020 is described by the manufacturer as a compact, DIN rail-mountable Ethernet control system with an Arm Cortex-A8 processor. On every Embedded PC, Bus Terminals or EtherCAT Terminals attach directly to the right-hand side of the unit.
Ordering Beckhoff controllers: what we need
The order code of a CX has several parts. Send the full string from the side label, for example CX5140-0xxx or CX9020-0xxx, since the last digits set the operating system and the TwinCAT version. Add any factory options such as extra fieldbus or serial interfaces, and the serial number. List the terminals that sit beside the controller if they are being replaced too. For an existing machine, tell us the TwinCAT version in use.

What do the digits after CX5140 or CX9020 mean?
The four digits after the hyphen identify the configuration of the controller: which operating system is installed and which TwinCAT level it is prepared for. Two units with the same front name can therefore differ. Read the complete order code from the label on the side of the housing and send it as written.
Is the CX9020 interchangeable with the CX5140?
No. Beckhoff builds the CX9020 on an Arm Cortex-A8 processor and the CX5100 series on Intel Atom processors, so they are different hardware platforms. A project written for one must be checked and rebuilt for the other. For a spare, order the same type and configuration as the unit fitted.
Which I/O terminals work with these controllers?
Beckhoff states that Bus Terminals and EtherCAT Terminals can be attached directly to the right-hand side of its Embedded PCs. Which of the two a given unit is set up for follows from its configuration and the terminals on the rail. Send the list of terminal types (KL or EL numbers) with the controller code.
