KROHNE OPTISWIRL 4200 Vortex Flowmeter for Steam, Gas, Liquid

Description

OPTISWIRL 4200 two-wire vortex flowmeter and its version codes

The KROHNE OPTISWIRL 4200 is a loop-powered vortex flowmeter for liquids, gases and steam that can carry its own temperature sensor and, as an option, a pressure sensor in the same body. That combination is the reason plant engineers choose it for steam and compressed-air networks: the meter calculates density from measured conditions and reports mass flow, normalised volume flow and even heat or energy without extra transmitters, wiring or a separate flow computer. Saturated-steam temperature compensation comes as standard.

The type letters in the name matter. C is the compact meter, and F is the remote version with the converter in a field housing up to 50 m from the sensor. F1R and F2R denote flanged bodies with an integrated reduction of one or two nominal sizes, so a DN100 sensor can sit in a DN150 or DN200 line without separate reducers. A dual version carries two independent sensors and two converters for redundant measurement, and a stainless-steel housing variant is also listed.

How the OPTISWIRL 4200 measures and compensates

A bluff body in the measuring tube sheds vortices alternately on each side, and the frequency of shedding is proportional to the flow velocity. A sensor behind the body detects those pulses and the converter turns the frequency into flow. KROHNE adds an advanced filtering routine, AVFD, which separates the real vortex frequency from pipe vibration and noise so that the meter stays stable at low flow and in vibrating plant.

The integrated temperature sensor allows the meter to identify and compensate saturated steam on its own. With the optional pressure sensor it can handle superheated steam, wet gas and gas mixtures where conditions vary, and it can compute gross and net heat for steam and hot water. A pressure sensor behind a built-in shut-off valve can be exchanged, pressure-tested or recalibrated without stopping the process, a feature that saves a shutdown in a steam header.

Where the OPTISWIRL 4200 fits in a plant

Typical points are boiler steam outlets, distribution headers, condensate and hot-water circuits, compressor discharge and compressed-air mains, and utility gas lines. The datasheet lists steam boiler monitoring, heat metering, industrial gas consumption, free air delivery evaluation and SIP and CIP processes among its applications, and notes development to IEC 61508 for safety-related measurement up to SIL 2. The product page quotes SIL 2/3 certification, so confirm the level you need against the certificate for the configuration ordered.

For larger or lower-pressure-drop pipes the F1R and F2R bodies avoid pipe reducers. Where different measuring principles are needed, our site also lists KROHNE electromagnetic, Coriolis and ultrasonic flowmeters such as the OPTIFLUX 4300, OPTIMASS 6400 and OPTISONIC 3400.

Selection and ordering checklist for the OPTISWIRL 4200

  • Medium (liquid, gas, saturated or superheated steam) with operating and maximum temperature and pressure.
  • Flow range in actual or standard units so that velocity falls within the recommended window: liquids 0.25 to 7 m/s, gases and steam 2 to 80 m/s.
  • Body type: flange or sandwich, size, and whether F1R or F2R reduction is useful.
  • Compact or remote converter, and cable distance if remote.
  • Pressure sensor range and shut-off valve, if mass or energy output is wanted.
  • Single or dual measurement for redundancy or multi-product lines.
  • Process materials, gasket choice (FPM or FFKM) and hazardous-area approval.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance

Vortex meters need a straight run and a full pipe. The datasheet asks for 15 DN of inlet after a single 90 degree bend, 30 DN after a double bend, 40 DN after a double three-dimensional bend and 50 DN after control valves, plus at least 5 DN of outlet. Install it with the flow arrow correct, and keep pipework vibration low. For gas and steam lines, mount so condensate cannot collect at the sensor, and for compensated measurement make sure the pressure sensor sees the true line pressure.

At commissioning, enter the fluid, pressure and temperature data and verify the output scaling. KROHNE offers the OPTICHECK service tool for on-site verification of the sensor, and the converter gives status messages in the NAMUR NE 107 style. Periodic checks of the pressure sensor with the shut-off valve closed keep compensation trustworthy.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Utility steam at refineries, gas processing plants and power stations is the core duty here, along with heat metering on district-cooling and hot-water loops and compressed-air consumption on large industrial sites. Desalination plants use steam and utility air, and petrochemical complexes need dependable mass flow of utility gases. In the Gulf, high ambient heat and sun make a remote converter or a shaded mounting worthwhile, and coastal humidity favours the IP66/67 housing with sealed cable glands.

About brand

KROHNE is the German flow and level measurement company founded in Duisburg in 1921 as Ludwig Krohne & Sohn. Its first customers were Ruhr steel producers, for whom it built variable area flowmeters. KROHNE dates the first electromagnetic flowmeter for industrial process measurement to 1952. It is still family-owned and headquartered in Duisburg.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list KROHNE electromagnetic, Coriolis, ultrasonic and variable area flowmeters, radar level transmitters and flow computers, and supply them to water utilities, oil and gas and process plants in Oman and the GCC by order code.

The flowmeter principle follows the medium. Electromagnetic meters need a conductive liquid, have no moving parts and no pressure loss, and suit water and slurries. Coriolis meters measure mass flow and density directly, so they work for hydrocarbons and non-conductive liquids. Ultrasonic meters handle gas and large pipes, and multi-path designs such as the ALTOSONIC V12 are used for custody transfer. Variable area meters need no power at all and give a simple local reading.

FAQ

Questions about the KROHNE OPTISWIRL 4200 Vortex Flowmeter for Steam,

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What does the OPTISWIRL 4200 measure besides volume flow?
With its integrated temperature sensor and optional pressure sensor it can output mass flow, normalised volume flow, density, and gross or net heat for steam and hot water. Saturated steam compensation is included as standard.
02What are F1R and F2R?
They are flanged versions with an integrated reduction of one or two nominal sizes. They let a smaller sensor operate in a larger line, improving the measuring range without separate pipe reducers.
03What is the maximum temperature and pressure?
The datasheet gives a medium temperature range of -40 to +240 degrees C and pressure up to 100 bar, with higher pressures on request. Your exact limits depend on size, flange rating and options.
04Can the pressure sensor be changed while the line runs?
Yes, if the optional shut-off valve for the pressure sensor is fitted. It allows the sensor to be replaced, pressure-tested or recalibrated without interrupting the process.
05How much straight pipe does it need?
The datasheet asks for at least 15 DN upstream after a single 90 degree bend, 30 DN after a double bend and 50 DN after control valves, with 5 DN downstream. Flow straighteners change these values.
