ABB MS165-42 Manual Motor Starter 30-42 A

Description

MS165-42 for 22 kW motors on a compact DIN-rail footprint

MS165-42 is the mid-size device of the ABB MS165 family, which stretches from 10 A to 80 A. ABB lists it at 30 to 42 A, matching a 22 kW motor at 400 V, with a fixed magnetic trip at 630 A and trip class 10. Like all MS165 types it is phase-loss sensitive, has a disconnect function and a lockable handle.

The housing is 55 mm wide, roughly one quarter wider than the MS132, and weighs 0.97 kg. A sealable cover protects the current setting from tampering.

For a quotation, send the order code 1SAM451000R1015 together with the motor nameplate current and the supply voltage. Seven Star LLC supplies this motor starter as an independent supplier in Muscat, and stock and delivery time are confirmed in the written quotation.

Short-circuit performance and losses

The data sheet lists 50 kA Ics and Icu at 230, 400, 415 and 440 V, with a 125 A gG back-up fuse. At 500 V this falls to 30 kA and at 690 V to 10 kA, which is much better than the MS132 range at 690 V. DC rating at 250 V (three poles in series) is 100 kA.

Resistance is 3.1 mOhm per pole and loss is 2.79 W per pole at 30 A, rising to 5.47 W at 42 A. Mount the device with the clearances specified in the datasheet to avoid cumulative heating in a crowded enclosure.

Starter combinations and installation

Combined with an AF contactor the MS165-42 makes a fuseless starter. The terminals take stranded conductors of 1 to 50 mm2 (flexible with ferrule 1 to 35 mm2), stripped 16 mm and tightened to 4 Nm, so a 22 kW feeder fits without lugs.

Adjacent ratings are MS165-32 (23 to 32 A) and MS165-54 (40 to 54 A). Mechanical durability is 50 000 operations.

Documents and quotation

The linked file is ABB MS165 manual motor starter data sheet 2CDC131083D0201. Seven Star LLC supplies the MS165-42 on request from Muscat; availability and lead time are stated in the quotation. For other protection devices see the Circuit Breakers category, for example the ABB Tmax XT moulded case circuit breakers.

Confirm before ordering: motor current inside the setting range, the prospective short-circuit current, voltage level, and whether a contactor and auxiliary contacts are part of the starter.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Formed 5 January 1988, by the merger of ASEA (Sweden) and BBC Brown Boveri (Switzerland), each holding 50%

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
