ABB MS132-10 Manual Motor Starter 6.3-10 A

Description

MS132-10 manual motor starter for 3-4 kW motors

MS132-10 is a 3-pole manual motor starter from ABB’s MS132 range. It combines thermal overload protection (6.3 to 10 A, trip class 10), magnetic short-circuit release at 120 to 180 A and a disconnect function in a 45 mm wide DIN-rail housing. ABB uses the device to start and stop motors by hand and to protect them without fuses.

The datasheet quotes 100 kA breaking capacity at both 230 V and 400 V, with no back-up fuse needed, which makes the MS132-10 attractive for compact motor feeders where fault levels are high.

What the 6.3-10 A setting covers

At 400 V a 4 kW motor draws about 8.5 A and a 3 kW motor about 6.5 A, so this range suits small pumps, fans and conveyors. The setting scale is in amperes: adjust it to the nameplate current, because ABB states no tripping at 1.05 x the setting and tripping at 1.2 x.

The device is phase-loss sensitive, temperature compensated from -25 to +60 C and shows ON, OFF and TRIP positions on a lockable handle. Power loss per phase is 0.9 W at the bottom of the range and 2.4 W at 10 A.

Fuseless starter combinations and ordering

Combined with an AF contactor, the MS132 forms a fuseless motor starter, saving space and wiring. For a signal contact, ABB lists variants with a pre-assembled HKF1 auxiliary contact whose order codes start with 1SAM350005. The plain MS132-10 listed here has the order code 1SAM350000R1010.

At 690 V the datasheet limits breaking capacity to 3 kA, so check the supply voltage before fitting it on a 690 V network. Neighbouring ratings in the same data sheet are MS132-6.3 (4 to 6.3 A) and MS132-12 (8 to 12 A), and above 10 A the housing is slightly larger.

Documents and quotation

The linked file is ABB MS132 manual motor starter data sheet 2CDC131021D0201. Seven Star LLC supplies the MS132-10 on request from Muscat; availability and lead time are stated in the quotation. For other protection devices see the Circuit Breakers category, for example the ABB Tmax XT moulded case circuit breakers.

Confirm before ordering: motor full-load current inside the setting range, the available fault level at the panel, whether the HKF1 auxiliary contact is needed, and the terminal type.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Formed 5 January 1988, by the merger of ASEA (Sweden) and BBC Brown Boveri (Switzerland), each holding 50%

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
