Normalab NAE 440 Automatic Aniline Point Tester

Description

Aniline point testing with two independent dry-bath stations

The NAE 440 is Normalab’s automatic aniline point tester. Equal volumes of aniline and sample are mixed in a U-tube and heated until they become one clear phase, then cooled until the mixture turns cloudy again; the temperature at which that happens is the aniline point. A low aniline point indicates a highly aromatic product, so the test is used for solvents, fuels and rubber process oils to judge aromatic content and solvent power.

Normalab lists ASTM D611, ISO 2977 (method 5), ISO 21493:2019 and IP 2 and related methods. They cover the aniline point of petroleum products and hydrocarbon solvents, and the mixed aniline point of those having aniline points below the temperature at which aniline crystallizes from the aniline-sample mixture.

Delivery, options and operation

The NAE 440 is delivered ready to use with two U-tubes (P/N 40546) and two probes (P/N 40536). Options listed are a cryostat from -15 to 60 °C with a 5 litre volume and lid (cryostat on request), an insulated tubing set for connecting it, a Dispensette S Organic digital dispenser of 1 to 10 ml in 0.05 ml steps, a thermal printer, a printer cable and printer paper in a 10-spool pack for the 440 range.

The dry bath removes the liquid bath used in older manual apparatus, and each station runs independently, so two samples can be started at different times. Automatic detection of the clouding point removes the need for the operator to watch the tube, and visual checking is still possible when a sample is difficult.

What to confirm before ordering

Aniline is toxic, so plan a ventilated bench, waste handling and the dispenser for measuring aniline and sample accurately. Because low-temperature tests need cooling below ambient, confirm whether a cryostat and insulated tubing are needed; the web page and leaflet state the lower temperature limit differently, so state your required range in the enquiry.

A product that is very dark or highly viscous may need the mixed aniline point approach or a different dilution, as set out in the standard. Results should be repeated according to the repeatability limits in the method. Also confirm the standard, the dispenser, printer, spare U-tubes and probes, and the 230 V supply. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
