Existent gum testing by air or steam jet evaporation
The NGT Classic is a five-station Normalab gum tester. A measured portion of fuel is evaporated from a tared beaker under a controlled jet of heated air or superheated steam; the residue left after evaporation is the existent gum, which is weighed and reported. High gum content signals deposits that can foul fuel systems, intake valves and injectors, so the test matters for aviation fuel, motor gasoline and other volatile distillates.
Normalab lists ASTM D381, IP 131, IP 540, ISO 6246 and DIN 51784 and related methods. The scope covers the existent gum content of aviation fuels and the gum content of motor gasolines or other volatile distillates in their finished form at the time of test. A switch selects air or steam, and the device carries digital controllers for air temperature and for both air and steam flows.

Delivered items, accessories and calibration
The NGT Classic is delivered with an ASTM 3C thermometer (P/N 11491, certificate on request), five beakers (P/N 19035), five conical outlets (P/N 941306), forceps for handling (P/N 10686) and a pair of gloves (P/N 9417444). Accessories and options must be ordered separately according to the application.
Listed accessories are a two-stage air compressor with 300 litre capacity (ref. 9413080, 400 V three-phase), a steam generator (ref. 941309, 400 V three-phase) with automatic water feeding, water level control, a pressure switch, a safety valve and a manometer, and a 120 g analytical balance with 0.1 mg readability (ref. 24248). The web page also lists 150 ml filter funnels with 50 mm frits, a class A 50 ml graduated beaker, a dryer and a porcelain plate for the desiccator.
For quality control, Normalab offers a calibration kit for air and a calibration kit for steam, which help verify the flow and temperature conditions the method requires.
Planning the installation
The steam method needs a steam generator and the air method needs a compressor of adequate capacity, and both of those listed accessories need a 400 V three-phase supply, unlike the 230 V tester itself. Confirm the utilities before ordering, together with the beakers and funnels, a balance, a drying oven or desiccator, and wash solvents.

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy.
