Automatic cleaning of diffusers for oil foam tests
The NDW Tech is a Normalab diffuser washer for lubricating oil foaming testers. In the foam test, air is blown through a diffuser into oil, and the diffuser pores must be completely clean and dry before the next run or the foam result drifts. The NDW Tech pumps solvent through the diffusers in a repeated cycle, which saves the time and solvent exposure of cleaning them by hand.
Normalab lists ASTM D892, ASTM D6082, IP 146 and ISO 6247 and related methods. According to the leaflet, the NDW Tech is used to clean diffusers for lubricating oil foaming tests under the D892 method, and it works with cylindrical metal diffusers and spherical diffusers.

Delivered items
The NDW Tech is delivered with a stand and support, four graduated cylinders of 1000 ml, four Teflon stoppers with pipe and male quick-coupling connector, a liquid trap glass bottle with screw cap, an air discharge pipe and a drying pipe for spheres. Normalab does not list separate options.
The design uses little solvent, reduces the operator’s exposure to solvents, and warns the operator when the solvent should be changed after a number of cycles.
Using it with the foam testers
The NDW Tech is the accessory named for both the FOAM 1&2 range and the FOAM HT tester. A laboratory that runs several foam tests a day gains the most, because every test needs freshly cleaned diffusers. Select the cleaning fluid according to your safety rules; Normalab’s leaflet recommends toluene or heptane, both flammable, so ventilation and waste handling must be planned.
After washing, the diffusers are dried with the drying pipe so that no solvent remains in the pores, and the operator should still inspect them for blockage or damage, since a clogged diffuser changes the bubble size and the foam test result. Before ordering, confirm the diffuser types to be cleaned, the solvent supply, a ventilated location, spare cylinders and stoppers, and the 230 V supply. Where a laboratory owns both a foam tester and the NDW Tech, it is practical to keep dedicated cylinders and stoppers for washing, so the sample cylinders stay clean and the wash cycle can start immediately after a test.
