Normalab DEM Tech Semi-Automatic Demulsibility Tester

Description

Water separation testing for turbine and hydraulic oils

The DEM Tech is Normalab’s half-automated demulsibility tester. In the test, oil and distilled water are stirred together at a set temperature and speed, then left to stand while the operator records how quickly and how completely the water separates. Oils that separate water fast keep their lubricating and cooling performance in wet service, which is why steam turbine, hydraulic and circulating oil users test it.

Normalab lists ASTM D1401, ISO 6614 and IP 412 and related methods. The method was developed for steam-turbine oils with viscosities of 28.8 to 90 mm2/s at 40 °C and may be used for other oils and synthetic fluids at other test temperatures.

Operation, safety and what is supplied

The carousel has double indexation for exact positioning, the paddle is removable, the paddle moves up and down automatically, and the upper part of the bath can be removed for cleaning. An integrated timer gives audible and visual alarms, and the calibration menu covers temperature, chronometer, speed and display. Technical access is password protected and software updates load through USB.

Safety features are no access to rotating parts during the test, water level detection with heating shut-off, over-temperature protection by safety thermostat, a plexiglass anti-drip deflector, a sensor for the up and down movement, fuse protection of components and overcurrent protection.

The DEM Tech is delivered ready to use with a stirring paddle and its certificate, four test cylinders compliant with ASTM D1401, six stoppers, a 6 mm spacer, a rubber spatula, a thermometer with certificate, a quick start guide, a USB stick with the user manual, a conformity leaflet, a stylus and a power cable.

Options and planning

Options are a cleaning and storing support for test tubes (6 positions), a tachometer for speed verification, an electronic thermometer with optional ISO 17025 certificate and an anti-algae treatment for the water bath. Leaflet applications are lubricants, hydraulic fluids, the petroleum and petrochemical industries, and maritime transport and aviation.

Cylinders and paddle must be cleaned thoroughly between runs, because traces of detergent or solvent distort water separation results. Keep ambient conditions within the stated range as well. Before ordering, confirm the required test temperatures, the supply of demineralized water, spare cylinders, calibration certificates and the installation height of 969 mm. Related equipment is under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Product families NPM 450 automated flash point testers, automatic distillation analysers, cloud and pour point testers, kinematic viscosity baths, copper corrosion and oxidation stability testers, laboratory glassware

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
