Normalab FOAM 1&2 Lubricating Oil Foaming Characteristics Tester

Description

Foam tendency and stability testing for lubricating oils

The FOAM 1&2 range from Normalab tests how much a lubricating oil foams and how quickly the foam collapses. A measured oil sample in a graduated cylinder is blown with air through a diffuser for a fixed time at a controlled temperature, and the foam volume is read at the end of blowing and again after a settling period. Foaming oil can starve pumps, reduce lubrication and spill from reservoirs, so the test is part of most lubricant and turbine oil specifications.

Normalab lists ASTM D892, ASTM D6082, IP 146 and ISO 6247 and related methods, covering foam tendency and stability of lubricating oils at 24 °C and 93.5 °C. FOAM 1 is built for sequences I and II and FOAM 2 for sequences I, II and III.

What each model includes

FOAM 1 is delivered with two spherical diffusers (P/N 24795), two test cylinders, two flowmeters, one ASTM 12C thermometer and one bath at 24 °C and 93.5 °C. FOAM 2 is delivered with two test baths at 24 °C and 93.5 °C, two ASTM 12C thermometers from -20 to +102 °C (without certificate) and four diffusers; the web page also lists NORTON spherical diffusers and test tubes.

Listed accessories are the NDW Tech diffuser washer with integrated pump (P/N 941645), a wet test gas meter (P/N 941644), a cooling cryostat in a model chosen for the application, an air compressor (P/N 9426433), a ready-to-use drying tower (P/N 9416401) and stainless steel spherical diffusers; cylindrical diffusers are also offered.

Choosing between FOAM 1, FOAM 2 and FOAM HT

Choose FOAM 1 for a laboratory that runs sequences I and II on one pair of cylinders, and FOAM 2 when sequence III is also needed with separate baths at 24 °C and 93.5 °C. For testing at 150 °C Normalab offers the separate FOAM HT unit, which is described on its own page.

Plan the air supply carefully: dry, clean air through the flowmeters and a drying tower are part of a correct set-up, and diffusers need washing between tests, which is the job of the NDW Tech. Normalab’s leaflet describes the coloured quick couplings as an easy way to connect inlets and outlets, which reduces set-up mistakes between runs. Before ordering, confirm the model, spare diffusers, cryostat, compressor, gas meter and supply. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
