Normalab GWM Classic Automatic Grease Worker

Description

Automatic grease working for consistency and shear stability tests

The GWM Classic is a compact twin-unit automatic grease worker from Normalab. A perforated plate is driven up and down through a cup of grease, which shears and softens the sample in a repeatable way before its penetration is measured with a cone. Working the grease by hand is tiring and varies from operator to operator; the GWM Classic counts the strokes electronically and stops by itself at the end of the test.

Normalab lists ASTM D217, ASTM D7342, IP 50, ISO 2137 and FTM 313 and related methods. ASTM D217 covers four procedures for measuring the consistency of lubricating greases by the penetration of a cone of specific dimensions, mass and finish, with penetration measured in tenths of a millimetre. The leaflet describes the worker as an essential apparatus for the working step of the penetration procedure.

Delivery and accessories

The GWM Classic is delivered with two plunger plates with 51 holes, two cups and covers, two dial thermometers and one safety cover. The thermometers are supplied with calibration and certificate on request, not as standard.

Listed accessories are a plunger plate with 270 holes (P/N 941760), a grease cutter with blade (P/N 941739) and a 30 x 200 mm spatula (P/N 27322). Normalab also points out, in its NPN Tech penetrometer leaflet, that the GWM Classic helps prepare grease for the shear stability test; the two instruments complement each other in a grease laboratory.

Planning for a grease laboratory

Greases are tested at a controlled temperature, so plan a temperature-controlled room or water bath for the cups, together with a penetrometer and cone set for the measurement step. Typical users are lubricant manufacturers, blending plants and quality laboratories that report NLGI consistency grades, as well as maintenance laboratories that compare in-service grease with fresh product. The twin design allows two cups to be worked together, for example a sample and a duplicate, which saves time on routine batches. The worker itself does not measure penetration; it prepares the sample.

The electrical requirement is the main point to check before ordering. The unit needs a 400 V three-phase supply and a specific electrical connection, unlike many bench instruments that run on 230 V single phase. Also confirm the number of strokes, the plates, thermometer certificates and spares. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
