C-TEC CPDUCT/OPT CAST-PRO Duct Smoke Detection Kit

Description

The C-TEC CPDUCT/OPT is a duct smoke detection kit for the CAST-PRO range. It consists of a CP416 CAST-PRO optical detector on a CA408 CAST base in a housing that is mounted outside an air duct and samples the duct air through a venturi tube. The tube has dual sampling ports positioned at the optimum separation points, so reliable smoke detection is possible even at very low air velocities; the manufacturer states that the system meets its requirements from 0.5 to 20 m/s.

How the sampling works

Air is drawn through the venturi tube into the optical detector, giving continuous sampling of the duct air. The installer’s guide states that the CP416 detector is certified by KIWA to EN54-7:2018, EN54-13 and EN54-17, and that the CPDUCT/OPT assembly is certified by CNBOP to EN54-27:2015, the standard for duct smoke detectors. The detector cover has a test hole for functional testing with smoke detector test spray, and the kit is loop powered at 22 to 40 V DC. The CP416 inside must be set to Mode 1.

Installation and selection

The housing may be mounted on the top, bottom or side of the duct with the detector oriented in the direction of airflow, away from heating, cooling and humidity control devices, duct bends, junctions and air inlets. A 38 mm hole is drilled in the duct, or 51 mm when the optional UG-MB-75 bracket is used on insulated or circular ducts. The venturi tube is ordered separately by duct width: the 0.6 m tube ST-2 for ducts up to 0.6 m, the 1.5 m tube ST-5 for ducts between 0.6 and 1.4 m, and the ST-EXTEND extension for ducts above 1.4 m. The tube should extend about 90 percent of the duct width and must not protrude more than 30 mm through the duct wall. The rating is IP54 for indoor use; fit the UG-COVER-75 where condensation can occur, such as outdoors or in unheated roof spaces, to give IP67 protection. Note also that the guide limits operation to -10 to +40 degC.

Where it fits

Duct detectors are used in air handling systems to detect smoke in the airflow, for example so that fans can be shut down or dampers closed through the panel cause and effect programming. The final design, including detector location and the actions on alarm, remains the fire engineer’s responsibility, and the manufacturer notes it accepts no responsibility for the compliance of the system as a whole.

How the C-TEC CPDUCT/OPT works

A venturi tube sits across the duct and draws a small flow of duct air into the housing. The CP416 optical detector inside samples that air continuously. The detector reports through the CAST loop to the fire alarm control panel.

Where the CPDUCT/OPT is used

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the CPDUCT/OPT

Cut a hole in the duct for the venturi tube and fix the housing outside the duct. Set the CP416 detector to Mode 1 and connect the loop wiring. Test with smoke detector test spray through the cover test hole, and check at regular intervals.

About brand

C-TEC has made life safety electronics in Wigan, United Kingdom since 1981: fire alarm panels, detectors, power supplies, disabled refuge and call systems. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists C-TEC panels and detectors such as the XFP501/CA single loop addressable fire panel, the CP416 CAST-PRO addressable optical smoke detector and the CFP708-4 eight zone conventional fire alarm panel.

C-TEC fire alarm families

The manufacturer divides fire systems into conventional and addressable. On the conventional side are the CFP panels in 2 to 8 zones, with ActiV detectors, sounders and call points. On the addressable side, XFP panels cover one or two loops and ZFP panels up to eight, working with C-TEC's own CAST protocol and CAST-PRO devices. Addressable panels are also made for Apollo XP95 and Discovery and for Hochiki ESP devices, so the protocol of a panel must match the detectors on its loop. EN54-4 power supplies, SigTEL refuge systems and EVAC-ALERT panels complete the range.

Ordering C-TEC equipment: what we need

Send the full part number including the suffix after the slash, which separates protocol versions of the same panel. Tell us the detector protocol already on site, the number of loops or zones, and any network or repeater requirement. For projects in the GCC, name the approval the consultant specifies so we request the matching certificates from the manufacturer.
