Rosemount 3814 4-Path Liquid Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Description

A full-bore liquid ultrasonic meter for custody transfer of hydrocarbons

The Rosemount 3814 is a 4-path, transit-time liquid ultrasonic flow meter designed for custody transfer of liquid hydrocarbons in accordance with API Chapter 5.8 and OIML R117. Pulses are sent in four parallel planes, and the difference between downstream and upstream transit times is proportional to fluid velocity. The full-bore spool piece has no moving parts and no incremental pressure drop, which Emerson says reduces maintenance and energy costs, and the non-wetted transducers are field replaceable. It supports bidirectional flow, a wide flow range, and an archive data log with hourly and daily information on 3810 Series Electronics.

Conditioning, calibration and selection

For higher viscosity fluids the datasheet gives flow conditioning recommendations by Reynolds number: a low Reynolds solution for 5,000 to 13,000, a Daniel Profiler or CPA 50E flow conditioner for 5,000 to 10,000, and a tube bundle for 10,000 and above. Emerson offers an ISO 17025 certified flow calibration laboratory for all meters. Pressure ratings by body material and flange class, weights and dimensions, and ordering information are in the datasheet. Related metering products are listed under Flowmeters, and flow computers such as the FloBoss S600+ are on the site.

About brand

Rosemount is Emerson's brand for pressure, temperature, level and flow measurement, best known for the 3051 pressure transmitter. Frank Werner, Robert Keppel and Vernon Heath founded it in Minnesota in 1956 as Rosemount Engineering Company, first making temperature sensors for aerospace. It moved into the process industries, took the name Rosemount Inc. in 1966, and has been part of Emerson since 1976.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Rosemount transmitters, level instruments, flowmeters and analytical sensors, and supply them and their spares to oil and gas, power, water and process plants in Oman and the GCC by model code.

Many Rosemount transmitters share one platform, so the model code tells you what you have. On a 3051, the letter after the number sets the type: C for coplanar (differential or gauge), T for in-line, L for liquid level and CF for a complete flowmeter. The next characters set the measurement type, the range code, the output (4-20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or WirelessHART) and the wetted materials. A transmitter with the wrong range code may work, but with poor accuracy at the point that matters.

Where Rosemount instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Rosemount instruments are used across upstream oil and gas, gas plants and LNG, refineries, tank farms and terminals, power and desalination stations, and water networks. Ultrasonic gas meters and tank gauges are used for fiscal and custody transfer measurement.

Ordering Rosemount instruments: what we need

Send the full model code from the nameplate (for example 3051CD2A22A1AM5B4) and the tag if it is a replacement. For a new instrument, send the measuring range, process connection, wetted materials, output protocol and hazardous area approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

What liquids is the 3814 meant for?
Liquid hydrocarbons in custody transfer. The datasheet lists FPSOs, offshore platforms, crude oil and refined product pipelines (ethane, LPG, gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel), loading and off-loading of ships, barges and railcars, and tank farms.
What accuracy and uncertainty does it state?
Linearity is plus or minus 0.15 percent of measured value over 1.2 to 12.2 m/s, or plus or minus 0.20 percent over 0.6 to 12.2 m/s as an option. Uncertainty of meter factor is below plus or minus 0.027 percent per API MPMS Chapter 5 Section 8.
