350 A DC inverter for pulse TIG and stick welding

The Telwin Superior TIG 421 DC-HF/LIFT (code 816132) is a three-phase direct-current inverter for TIG, pulse TIG and MMA welding. The arc can be struck with high frequency or by lift start, and the machine welds steel, stainless steel, titanium, copper, nickel and their alloys. Telwin supplies this code complete with TIG welding accessories: an ST26 TIG welding kit, a two-gauge gas regulator and a quick gas connector, packed with the Superior TIG 421 power source (816068).

Welding functions and machine protection

Pulse and EASY pulse operation reduce heat input on thin stainless and nickel alloys. TIG settings include bi-level current, start and end current, spot welding time, pre-gas and post-gas, and current up and down slope; nine customised welding programs can be stored. In MMA mode, arc force and hot start are matched to the electrode type, and an anti-stick device protects the electrode when it freezes to the work.

The front panel has connectors for a remote control and for the G.R.A. water cooling unit. The machine stores the last 10 alarms in its on-board E2PROM and is protected against overheating, over- and undervoltage, internal dirt, overcurrent, phase failure and cooling unit faults.

As general practice, HF starting gives a contact-free strike that keeps the tungsten clean on critical stainless and titanium welds, while lift start is chosen near electronic equipment or in installations where high-frequency interference must be avoided. With 215 A available continuously, the 421 handles thick-wall pipe and plate fill passes with 2.4 or 3.2 mm tungstens, and it can also burn 4 or 5 mm stick electrodes for structural repairs.
