Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers
Description
Overview
Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers are the ultrasonic probes that allow Dakota bolt tension instruments to measure the actual elongation produced when a threaded fastener is tightened. Torque alone is a poor indicator of clamp load, because friction under the nut and in the threads can absorb most of the applied torque. By measuring the change in length of the bolt directly, an ultrasonic system removes that uncertainty and gives inspectors a load value they can document for critical flanged joints, structural connections and rotating equipment.
As the official authorized partner and exclusive regional representative for Dakota NDT, Seven Star LLC supplies the full range of Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers to maintenance contractors, refineries, power stations and fabrication shops across Oman and the GCC, backed by manufacturer documentation and local technical support.
Measurement Principle
Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers send a short ultrasonic pulse from the head of the fastener along its length. The pulse reflects from the far end and returns to the transducer, and the instrument measures the transit time with high resolution. When the bolt is loaded, it stretches, so the sound path becomes longer and the transit time increases. Within the elastic limit of the fastener, this change of length is proportional to the applied load, and knowing the physical properties of the fastener allows the instrument to calculate the load.
A reference reading is taken on the unloaded bolt, and subsequent readings during and after tightening show elongation, load or stress. Because the measurement depends only on access to one end of the bolt, it can be repeated at any time to verify that the joint has kept its preload after start-up, thermal cycling or vibration. The choice of transducer frequency, diameter and damping determines how clean the back-wall echo is on a given bolt length and material.
Engineering Design of the Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers
The Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers range is built around single element contact probes. Non-magnetic finger tip probes are offered at 2.25, 5.00 and 10.00 MHz in 1/4 and 1/2 inch diameters with resolution damping, and slim 1/8 inch highly damped finger tip probes are available at 5.00 and 10.00 MHz for small fasteners. Each finger tip model comes with either a Microdot top connector or a Microdot side connector, so the cable can exit in the direction that suits the joint.
Magnetic single element transducers clamp themselves onto the end of steel bolts, which keeps the probe in exactly the same position for repeated readings while the nut is being tightened. These are available at 2.25 MHz from 1/4 to 3/4 inch, at 5.00 MHz from 1/8 to 3/4 inch and at 10.00 MHz in 1/8 and 1/4 inch, all as standard undamped designs with Microdot top connectors. A 2.25 MHz, 3/4 inch potted stick-on probe and 7.50 MHz glue-on crystals in lots of 12 or 100 pieces complete the range for permanent monitoring points.
Key Features
Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers provide a probe for almost every fastener inspection task:
- Frequencies of 2.25, 5.00, 7.50 and 10.00 MHz to match bolt length, diameter and material.
- Finger tip contact probes with Microdot top or side connectors for flexible cable routing.
- Magnetic probes that hold position on steel bolt ends for repeatable elongation readings.
- Slim 1/8 inch highly damped probes for small studs and screws with limited end area.
- Stick-on and glue-on elements for permanent or semi-permanent monitoring of critical joints.
- Resolution, standard and highly damped versions to optimize echo quality.
- Compatibility with the Dakota BT1-DL, BT2-DL and MultiMax instruments.
- Suitable for all metals used in industrial fasteners.
Industrial Applications
Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers are used on pressure vessel and heat exchanger flanges, pipeline flange joints, wind turbine tower and blade bolts, gas turbine and compressor casings, reactor heads and structural steel connections. In refineries and gas plants they help confirm uniform bolt load during turnaround flange management, reducing leak risk at start-up. In power and desalination plants they are used on pump and turbine casings where uneven load can cause gasket failure.
As the officially authorized partner for Dakota NDT, Seven Star LLC supplies Dakota Bolt Tension Monitor Transducers to inspection service companies, EPC contractors and plant reliability teams throughout Oman and the wider GCC, including sites in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah, matching each probe to the customer’s bolt size, material and instrument model.

About brand
Ultrasonic thickness gauging is the core of Dakota NDT, the Scotts Valley, USA maker that many inspectors still know as Dakota Ultrasonics. Its instruments measure remaining wall on corroded pipe and vessels, check precision parts, find flaws in welds and monitor bolt elongation.
Seven Star LLC is the Dakota NDT agency for Oman and the GCC. We list Dakota corrosion and precision thickness gauges, flaw detectors, transducers, delay line tips and calibration blocks, and supply them with the manufacturer's documentation.
Dakota NDT product families
Corrosion thickness gauges form the largest group: the CMX10-DL with full waveform capture, the CMX, CX and ZX series and the MX2-DL. For thin or tight-tolerance material Dakota builds the precision line, made up of the PZX1-DL, the PCX8-DL and the PMX series. The RX8-DL sonic tester, the PMX4-DL and the R9 sit in the specialty group. Flaw detection is handled by the handheld FX71-DL and the bench-top FX81-DL, and bolt tension by the BT1-DL, the BT2-DL and the MultiMax remote monitoring system. Dual element transducers pair with corrosion gauges, single element and delay line probes with precision gauges. DakMaster and DakView software take care of data transfer and reporting.
Where Dakota ultrasonic thickness gauges are used
Typical jobs are wall-loss surveys on pipelines, tanks, boiler tubes and pressure vessels in oil and gas plants and power stations, thickness checks on machined, drawn or molded parts, weld inspection in fabrication shops, and bolted joints on flanges and turbines where clamp load matters more than torque.
Ordering Dakota gauges and probes: what we need
A useful inquiry names the gauge model, the material, its expected thickness span, the surface temperature and whether the surface is coated. For transducers send the frequency, element diameter, connector type and the gauge the probe will be used with. For calibration blocks give the material and the step sizes you need. If you already own a Dakota instrument, a photo of its label and of the current probe lets us check the match against the manufacturer's documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Torque is affected by friction under the nut and in the threads, so the same torque can give very different clamp loads. The transducers let a Dakota instrument measure actual bolt elongation, which is proportional to load within the elastic limit.
Lower frequencies such as 2.25 MHz penetrate long or coarse-grained bolts better, while 5.00 and 10.00 MHz give higher resolution on shorter fasteners. Seven Star LLC can recommend a probe based on bolt length, diameter and material.
Magnetic probes clamp onto the end of steel bolts and stay in the same position while the nut is tightened, which improves repeatability between the reference reading and the loaded readings.
The listed transducers are specified for the Dakota BT1-DL, BT2-DL and MultiMax bolt tension monitors. For other instruments, contact us with the model so we can confirm connector and frequency compatibility.
