Hach BioTector B3500ul Online TOC Analyzer
Overview
The Hach BioTector B3500ul is an online Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzer purpose-built for ultra-low-level TOC monitoring in ultrapure water applications, measuring in the 0-5000 µg/L (ppb) carbon range. It uses Hach’s patented two-stage advanced oxidation process, combining UV and chemical oxidation, to reliably break down even resistant organic compounds and deliver a true, undivided TOC result rather than relying on a single-pass combustion technique that can under-report certain organic species. The B3500ul is built for continuous, unattended operation with industry-leading uptime, supporting up to two process streams plus grab sample capability from a single analyzer.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Hach BioTector B3500ul as an authorized Hach partner to power stations, semiconductor plants, pharmaceutical facilities, and RO/ultrapure water systems across Oman and the GCC that require trace-level TOC monitoring for boiler feedwater purity, condensate polishing, or ultrapure water quality assurance. Our team can help configure the correct stream count, voltage, and sample conditioning accessories for your specific water quality program before the analyzer ships.
Measurement and Operating Principle
The BioTector B3500ul draws a sample into a reaction chamber where it undergoes a two-stage advanced oxidation process: an initial ambient-temperature reaction stage followed by a second stage under elevated temperature and pressure, ensuring complete oxidation of both easily-oxidized and refractory organic compounds. Carbon dioxide released by the oxidation reaction is measured by non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) detection, and the analyzer reports TOC (or TIC, TC, and VOC, with COD/BOD correlation available) as micrograms per litre of carbon, down to a lower limit of detection of roughly 10 µg/L TOC.
Because the reaction chemistry fully oxidizes the sample rather than relying on catalytic combustion, the BioTector platform is inherently resistant to interference from inorganic salts, chlorides, and other matrix components that can foul or bias combustion-based TOC analyzers over time. This design underpins the B3500ul’s certified 99.86% uptime and its stated requirement of only two short scheduled maintenance events per year, making it well suited to continuous, unattended service in critical ultrapure water loops.
Engineering Design
The Hach BioTector B3500ul is engineered around Hach’s field-proven BioTector reactor platform, with a repeatability specification of ±2% of reading or ±6 µg/L C (whichever is greater) and a response time from around five minutes depending on application and stream configuration. The analyzer supports up to two process streams plus grab sample analysis from the same reaction chamber, reducing the capital and maintenance burden of monitoring multiple ultrapure water points compared to installing separate single-stream analyzers.
Application areas documented by Hach for the B3500ul include dry steam power generation monitoring and semiconductor-grade ultrapure water quality assurance, where trace-level organic carbon directly affects turbine reliability or wafer yield. The unit is available in multiple AC voltage configurations (115 V and 230 V) and single- or dual-stream builds, allowing it to be specified precisely against the sample points and power infrastructure of the installation site.
The Hach BioTector B3500ul oxidation chemistry uses a 1.2 N sodium hydroxide base reagent and a 1.8 N sulfuric acid reagent containing 80 mg/L manganese as a catalytic aid, both delivered from bulk reagent containers sized to the analyzer’s low, predictable dosing rate per sample cycle. The analyzer accepts sample across a pH range of 1 to 12 and an inlet temperature of 2°C to 60°C, giving it tolerance for the variable feed conditions found on ultrapure water, condensate, and produced water sample points without requiring dedicated upstream pH conditioning in most applications. Accuracy is specified separately from repeatability at ±2% of reading or ±15 µg/L C, whichever is greater, with a limit of quantification of approximately 80 µg/L TOC. Housed in a floor-standing enclosure measuring 1000 mm high by 500 mm wide by 320 mm deep and weighing approximately 50 kg, the B3500ul is available with IP44 or IP54 protection depending on the cooling configuration selected, and operates across an ambient range of 5°C to 45°C and up to 85% relative humidity, non-condensing.
On the communications side, the BioTector B3500ul supports Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, and an optional Profibus interface, and retains the previous 9,999 analysis records plus 99 fault records on board, with archive export to SD/MMC card for offline review or compliance recordkeeping. Hazardous-area variants are available with ATEX Zone 1/2, Class I Division 2, or IECEx Zone 1 certification, extending the B3500ul’s applicability to classified sample points within refinery and gas processing utilities as well as conventional power and semiconductor plant rooms.
