Yaskawa U1000 Industrial Matrix Drive
Description
Overview
The Yaskawa U1000 Industrial Matrix Drive is a low-harmonic, regenerative AC drive that goes beyond conventional VFD design. Instead of rectifying the supply to a DC bus, it switches the incoming three-phase voltage directly to the motor output. The result is sinusoidal input current, near unity power factor and full power regeneration in a single compact unit, without the 12/18-pulse transformers, passive filters, active front ends or braking resistors that conventional low-harmonic solutions require. The Yaskawa U1000 is offered in 240 V and 480 V classes up to 800 HP normal duty.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Yaskawa U1000 to oil and gas, water, mining and industrial customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We support consultants and end users in assessing harmonic limits, regenerative energy and panel space when comparing the matrix drive with alternative architectures.
Operating Principle
The Yaskawa U1000 employs nine bi-directional switches arranged in a matrix that connects each of the three input phases to each of the three output phases. By switching these devices at high frequency, the drive builds the output voltage pulses directly from the input waveform, AC to AC, with no intermediate DC bus capacitors. Because current is drawn from all phases in a controlled manner, input current is close to sinusoidal, with iTHD around 5 % and power factor of about 0.98, which facilitates IEEE 519 compliance without external harmonic equipment.
The same bi-directional switches allow energy to flow in either direction. When a load overhauls the motor — a descending hoist, a decelerating centrifuge, a test stand absorber or the down-stroke of a pumpjack — the Yaskawa U1000 returns the braking energy directly to the supply instead of burning it in resistors. The drive can switch instantly and automatically between full motoring and full regeneration, and continuous regeneration is supported. An Eco-Mode can pass line power directly to the motor at full load to raise efficiency further.
Engineering Design of the Yaskawa U1000
Because no external transformer, filter or braking unit is required, the Yaskawa U1000 occupies far less space than a conventional low-harmonic drive system; Yaskawa states the solution can be more than 60 % smaller and 80 % lighter with over 70 % less wiring. It is three wires in, three wires out. Integrated input fusing provides a 100 kA short-circuit current rating, the design MTBF exceeds 28 years, and models are available as open chassis IP00 with NEMA 1 and external heatsink kits. The two largest 480 V ratings use a separate input PWM filter.
The control platform is shared with the Yaskawa industrial drive family. The Yaskawa U1000 controls induction and permanent magnet motors, delivers 0–400 Hz output, and provides eight digital inputs, three analog inputs, a pulse train input, two Safe Torque Off inputs (SIL3, PLe), four relay outputs, two analog outputs and a pulse train output. Modbus RTU is embedded, and options add EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS-DP and PROFINET. A multi-language LCD keypad with copy function, DriveWizard software and DriveWorksEZ embedded logic simplify commissioning.
Key Features
The Yaskawa U1000 provides the following advantages over conventional drives:
- Direct AC-to-AC matrix conversion with no DC bus and no electrolytic bus capacitors.
- Low input current harmonics at all speeds and loads, facilitating IEEE 519 compliance.
- Near unity true power factor at full load, reducing stress on transformers and generators.
- Full and continuous regeneration back to the supply with no braking resistors.
- Compact all-in-one design that eliminates transformers, filters and active front ends.
- Integrated input fusing with 100 kA SCCR and MTBF exceeding 28 years.
- Induction and permanent magnet motor control with Safe Torque Off to SIL3 and PLe.
- Normal duty 120 % and heavy duty 150 % overload for 60 seconds.
Industrial Applications
Oil fields in Oman make wide use of rod pumps, and the pumpjack is a natural matrix drive application: the weight of the rod string creates regenerative conditions for up to half of every stroke, and the matrix drive recovers that energy while keeping harmonics low on weak field generator supplies. Water and wastewater plants use the Yaskawa U1000 on raw water pumps, blowers and sludge pumps where utility harmonic limits apply, and on large fans and pumps where a low-harmonic drive avoids the need for a dedicated transformer. Remote installations can even reduce transformer sizing thanks to the near unity power factor.
Cranes, hoists, elevators, escalators, winders, centrifuges and test benches in GCC industry benefit from regeneration, which removes resistor heat from electrical rooms and saves energy. For standard non-regenerative duties, the Yaskawa GA700 high performance AC drive or drives such as the Schneider Electric Altivar Process ATV930 or the Danfoss VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 remain cost-effective choices; the Yaskawa U1000 is selected where harmonics, regenerative energy and panel space all matter. Seven Star LLC supplies the matrix drive together with keypads, communication options and mechanical kits, and supports clients in Muscat with technical comparisons.

About brand
Variable speed drives are the Yaskawa products most plant electricians meet first, usually on a pump, fan or conveyor. The company dates from 1915 and is based in Kitakyushu, Japan, and it also makes servo systems, robots and PLCs. Seven Star LLC supplies Yaskawa AC drives and control hardware in Oman. Listed here are the GA500 and GA700 drives and two 300S CPUs that many users still know under the VIPA name.
Yaskawa drives and VIPA controllers listed here
The GA500 is the compact microdrive for small motors and machine applications, and the GA700 is the general-purpose drive for larger motors and more demanding control. The GA500 is the follow-on to the V1000, and Yaskawa publishes a transition guide between the two. On the control side, the 315-2AG23 (CPU 315SB/DPM) and 315-4NE23 (CPU 315SN/NET) are SPEED7 processors of the 300S system, programmed with Siemens STEP 7 tools.
Ordering Yaskawa drives and CPUs: what we need
For a drive, send the full catalog code from the nameplate (it starts with CIPR-GA50 or CIPR-GA70), which fixes the voltage class, current rating and enclosure. Add the motor power and current, supply voltage, duty (normal or heavy) and any fieldbus option card. For a VIPA CPU, send the order number and the hardware and firmware version on the front label. We supply across the GCC and check each code against Yaskawa documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Yaskawa U1000 uses matrix technology that switches the input voltage directly to the output without a DC bus, drawing near-sinusoidal input current. This achieves iTHD around 5 % and power factor near unity, facilitating IEEE 519 compliance without external filters or multi-pulse transformers.
Yes. Its bi-directional switches allow full and continuous regeneration, returning braking energy from overhauling loads such as hoists, centrifuges, test stands and pumpjacks directly to the supply without braking resistors.
The 240 V class covers 10 to 100 HP normal duty and the 480 V class covers 7.5 to 800 HP normal duty. The two largest 480 V models require a separate input PWM filter.
Yes. Yaskawa highlights pumpjacks as an application because the rod weight creates regenerative conditions for up to half of the pumping cycle, and the U1000 switches seamlessly between motoring and regeneration to recover that energy.
